Description

Beginning in the late 18th century and continuing through the early 19th century, German Romanticism influenced philosophy, literature, painting and music in German-speaking countries. Goethe, Heine, E. T. A. Hoffmann and Novalis produced works that directly influenced composers such as Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Liszt. This course will cover major works from five genres (Lied, opera, solo piano, symphony, chamber music) within the context of the larger movement of German Romanticism. Students must also enroll in the Ekphrastic Literature course (EN340/EN301/IN350).
