PACE Dominican Republic immersion

Millikin University offers multiple semester, summer, and immersion programs in the Dominican Republic, based on long-standing collaborations.

Instituto Cultural Dominico-Americano (ICDA), Santo Domingo
(site in English)

"The ICDA's mission is to encourage and carry out educational programs in general, and more specifically the teaching of English as a foreign language; to work towards a better development of the community it serves, and to promote knowledge, good understanding, and the intensification of the friendly relations between the Dominican Republic and the United States of America."  (ICDA website)

ICDA is located in the capital city of Santo Domingo, the oldest continuously inhabited city in the Americas. With a population of over 2.2 million, the city is on the island's southern coast, and it showcases the first European-built cathedral, fort, monastery, hospital, and university in the Americas.

"UNICDA is the University of the Instituto Cultural Domínico-Americano (ICDA). ... It offers programs at an associate's level, at a bachelor's level, and at the post graduate level. ... UNICDA is the only university in the Dominican Republic that offers its students the opportunity of studying in Spanish as well as in English, thus attaining a complete mastery of both languages."

ICDA is the site of the annual Millikin summer program in Santo Domingo. Millikin students can also spend a semester at ICDA studying intensive Spanish and becoming immersed in this culture. English language courses in Dominican culture, history and politics, as well as four levels of Spanish language are available for credit. In addition, internships and service learning credits are available.  Housing arrangements are made with local families.

Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM):
Founded in 1962 . The language of instruction is Spanish.

PUCMM is a private, non-profit institution dedicated to education, research, and service to the community. In its programs it pursues academic excellence and harmonious synthesis of  reason,  science,  culture, and Christian faith.  Its focus is on stimulating and helping the development of the country and on contributing solutions to the problems that limit that development. (Proximate translation of institutional philosophy and mission.)

The primary objective of the PUCMM academic program for non-Dominicans is to provide students with the opportunity to develop oral and written Spanish skills, and to learn about Caribbean society and culture. This objective is advanced through university courses, home stays, and a community service program which places students directly within the mainstream of Dominican society. Students with beginning to advanced Spanish language skills can be accommodated. Students with advanced Spanish language skills will have a modified program which will allow them to attend a selection of regular university courses over the full semester.

PUCMM is the site of Millikin's International Teacher-Scholars Program, which offers a spring semester of study in the Dominican Republic to qualified Millikin juniors studying education. Completing a total of 15 credits during the semester, students take courses at PUCMM and teach English in urban and rural public schools.
