Asian,
Arabic Drama and Comparative English Literature Satisfies one:
If taken as TH 331, 332, 333, or 334, this course satisfies the Dramatic Literature requirement in the Theatre Department OR the fine arts requirement for non-Theatre majors. If taken as IN350, the course satisfies the Global Studies requirement of the MPSL. In this course we will read plays of Indian, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese playwrights to establish an understanding of themes found to be common with those of western drama and those themes that are unique to the Eastern perspective. For example, the female representation of Kabuki theatre is also found in the work of William Shakespeare and other Elizabethan playwrights. We will explore these commonalities. The course will use the resources of London and the surrounding areas to reinforce the work done in the classroom. We will visit the Theatre Museum as well as spend time in the Victoria & Albert Museum. The V&A has the largest collection of eastern artifacts and textiles in the Western world. We will visit other museums of interest and spend time in the Arabic community living in London today. The class will attend performances of shows that contribute to an understanding of Asian and Arabic Drama, as well as performances that meet interests of students enrolled in the course. Additionally, day trips the further the student’s understanding and appreciation of theatre arts as a whole.
