Several Millikin students took part in the chamber music festival in Urbania in the Summer of 2004.  You could be there in 2006!

Bella Musica: 3rd Annual Chamber Music Festival in Urbania, Italy

Between July 3 and 28th, 2006, you can combine perfecting your musical skills and learning the Italian language.  The program includes 20-25 hours/week of intensive language study at the internationally renowned Centro Studi Italiani, Urbania, Italy in addition to the music experience.

Urbania is a beautiful medieval city located in Le Marche region of Italy, between the Adriatic Sea and Tuscany, with a population of about 6,600. With  breathtaking landscapes, a mild climate and hospitable people, Urbania is a wonderful place for intensive music, language and culture study.

Other immersions

Bella Musica is open to talented instrumentalists and vocalists. Pianists, string, and woodwind players will receive two to three coaching sessions per week on duo, trio, quartet, and quintet ensemble repertoire; flute choir is also offered. Private lessons on solo or chamber repertoire are included. Vocalists may take private voice lessons with the option of coaching with vocal coaches from the Rossini Opera Festival. Vocalists interested in a chamber experience may audition for a Medieval and Renaissance vocal ensemble based on period research and performance practice. An intensive course in vocal pedagogy will be offered for those interested in learning how to teach voice. Students and faculty present weekly recitals in the salon at Centro Studi Italiani. Additional performance opportunities are available throughout the Marche region.

Millikin University faculty Dr. Susan Schroeder Cobb, Dr. Laurie Glencross, Tina Nicholson, and Thomas R. LeVeck conduct the chamber music instrumental program. Dr. Cobb is Director of the Bella Musica and the piano division. Dr. Glencross, flutist, and Tina Nicholson, oboist, will direct the woodwind division; Thomas R. LeVeck, violinist, will direct the string division. Daniel J. Carberg will supervise the vocal division and direct the Medieval/Renaissance ensemble.

During the four weeks of the festival, students may stay in apartments or with host families, absorbing local culture on a daily basis. The combination of studying music and the Italian language while living with native Italians is truly unique. For those wanting to explore Italy, excursions to neighboring towns such as Florence, Siena, and Assisi are offered on Wednesday afternoons and Sundays for a nominal fee.

Bella Musica is open to college students, junior/senior high school students, and adults. String quartet, trio, or woodwind ensembles are encouraged to apply. High school students or adults may enroll at a reduced credit rate through the Millikin University Discovery Courses program. College students may receive credit for the language and music components of the program by paying summer school tuition through Millikin University.
