Pre-departure and
orientation information, both printed and verbal, contains information
for faculty and students about health and safety issues related to
international travel. Adherence to this information, along with
appropriate behavior, caution, and common sense, can prevent many of the
crisis situations listed below.
Conditions Requiring Crisis Management
- Serious illness, injury, or death
- Emotional or psychological stress that requires
intervention
- A participant is the victim of a crime (e.g.
theft, assault, rape, harassment) or is accused of committing a crime
- An in-country situation arises that causes
concern (e.g. political uprising, terrorism attack or natural
disaster)
- Personal conduct issues at the discretion of the
MU faculty director or other program official
- Any other international situation that could
warrant concern, either US domestic, or foreign

Sick or Injured Student or MU Faculty Director
- On-site personnel (e.g. faculty director,
student, program provider) contact the appropriate local authorities
(e.g. police, US Embassy, medical personnel) to begin the necessary
local action.
- On-site personnel contact the Millikin
University security office (217) 464-8888. If possible, identify
with whom you wish to speak.
- Security will call the appropriate person, who
will call you back.
- In all cases,
the Director of International Studies will also be notified.
- On-site personnel should also contact the
International Student ID Card (ISIC) toll-free help line, as all students
and faculty will have these cards providing relevant benefits.

- The Director of International Studies will
call the emergency contact of the person or persons involved in the
crisis to apprise them of the situation.
- Necessary action will be taken: provision for
medical care in-country, emergency evacuation, etc.

Emotional or Psychological Problems
of a Student or Faculty Director

personnel contact the appropriate local authorities (e.g. police, US
Embassy, medical personnel) to begin the local action necessary to
handle this situation.
- If urgent:
On-site personnel contact the Millikin University security office
(217) 464-8888. Security will call the Director of International
Studies.

OR:
On-site personnel can contact Director of International Studies
directly, at
(217) 424-6387.

Director of International Studies will contact on-campus counseling
personnel.

Counselors will be in touch with student, faculty director, and
on-site coordinator to evaluate the situation and make necessary
recommendations.

Director of International Studies will also contact the emergency
contact of the student or faculty director, if appropriate.

If
appropriate, the Director will work with legal counsel.

Student or Faculty Director is the Victim of a Crime
- On-site personnel contact the appropriate
local authorities (e.g. police, US Embassy, medical personnel) to
begin the local action necessary to handle this situation.
- On-site personnel contact the Millikin
University security office (217) 464-8888.
- Security will contact the Director, Department
of Safety and Security and the Director of International Studies.
- If the incident is between two students, the
Dean of Student Development has primary responsibility and university
policy will apply.
- If the incident is between a student member of
the group and the faculty director, the appropriate Dean has primary
responsibility and university policy will apply.
- If the incident is between a member of the
group and an outside party, action taken will depend on the legal
requirements of the host country and wishes of the victim. On-site
personnel may contact the International Student ID Card toll-free
help line (see contact numbers).
- Legal counsel will be contacted by the
Director of Dean of Student Development if necessary, for appropriate
advice.

Student or Faculty Director is Accused of Committing a Crime
- On-site personnel contact the appropriate
local authorities (e.g. police, US Embassy, medical personnel) to
begin the local action necessary to handle this situation.
- On-site personnel contact the Millikin
University security office (217) 464-8888.
- Security will contact the Director, Department
of Safety and Security and the Director of International Studies.
- If the incident is between a member of the
group and an outside party, action taken will depend on legal
requirements of the host country and the wishes of the victim.
- Legal counsel will be contacted by the
Director, if necessary, for appropriate advice on the role of the
organization in the situation.
- On-site personnel may contact the
International Student ID Card toll-free help line (see contact
numbers).
- In consultation with the on-site coordinators,
the Director will contact the emergency contact of the student or
faculty director employee, if desired.

Death of a Student or
Faculty Director
- On-site personnel contact the appropriate
local authorities (e.g. police, US Embassy, medical personnel) to
begin the local action necessary to handle this situation.
- On-site personnel contact the Millikin
University security office (217) 464-8888.
- Security will contact the Director, Department
of Safety and Security and the Director of International Studies who
will initiate Millikin University protocol.
- Working Rule: All persons should always have
another person in the room when discussion of these situations takes
place (e.g. phone conversations).
