Millikin students on earlier immersion to ChangChun: with students; learning calligraphy

ED481/ES360 Course Description:

This course is a concentrated teaching experience in a classroom in ChangChun, China, including the option of practicing teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) through physical education (ES360). 

The instructor will conduct seminars for orientation, discussion, and evaluation.  You will be responsible for planning a series of lessons for 10 consecutive days that will help 8th -12th graders improve their English language speaking skills.   

ED481/ES360 Objectives: 

  1. You will develop sensitivity to the distinct classroom dynamics of a Chinese classroom.
  2. You will successfully complete large group, small group, and individual instruction for Chinese students.
  3. You will develop meaningful lesson plans in conjunction with university professors from United States and China through daily planning meetings.
  4. You will develop formal and informal assessment tools and apply them in order to measure student learning over time.
  5. You will engage in daily reflection about their teaching with their American and Chinese peers as well as their university professors.

IN350 Course Description

This course will take you to The People's Republic of China and Northeast Normal University in ChangChun, Jilin Province.  You will engage in Chinese cultural activities including history, geography, literature, and arts by visiting sites and landmarks in and around ChangChun City.  Upon arrival in Beijing you will visit The Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square before traveling by train to ChangChun.  The last days of the trip will be spent in Beijing visiting The Great Wall and observe preparations for the 2008 Summer Olympics.    

Costs and logistics for trip

Tuition: $1,530 for 6 credits (must register for two course)
Airfare: approximately $1,500 (will be arranged for group flight)
There will be additional costs for food and incidental expenses.

$800.00 deposit toward tuition and airfare is required by April 17, 2006.
