South African Ecology  BI 280 or BI 380 – 4 cr, Judy Parrish

IN  350, 3 cr. Exploration of history and evolution of diverse cultures of South Africa, with collaboration of South African teacher Peter Scheepers

  • Cape Province – one of 18 “hot spots” of biodiversity 73% live nowhere else in the world –“fynbos” 

  • Kruger National Park – one of the first national parks in the world –  (elephants, zebras, wildebeests, antelope, giraffe, cape buffalo, lions, leopards, cheetah, weaverbirds, rollers, cranes…)

  • Capetown visiting Kirchtenbosch Botanical Gardens, the Cape of Good Hope (jackass penguins, dassies or rock hyrax), Table Mountain (1470 species of plants in 60 square km), Cape Flats, Robben Island

  • Cape Flats - Rondevlei Nature Preserve 

Classes will meet for 2 orientation sessions during spring semester, then for 2 days before the trip. We will then fly to Johannesburg, spend 5 days and 4 nights on safari in Kruger National Park, visit historic sites near Pretoria, then fly to Capetown.       Full itinerary 

Travel costs will be approximately $3200, plus passport, health preparations, books, and gear. Limited to 16 participants.

  • Pre-requisites for BI 380: BI 105/155 and 108/158, or approval.
  • No pre-requisite for BI 280 other than instructor approval, fitting MPSL laboratory science requirement.
  • Pre-requisite for IN 350: junior or senior standing.
  • No pre-requisite for AR 260, a nonmajor course fitting MPSL Fine Arts requirement.
