Immersion travel courses for January 2008
(in no particular order)

For all classes, you must first sign a contract with the professor.
Deposits should be made in Student Services
(when and how much will vary).

After deposit payment is made in the Student Service Center, receipt and signed contract should be brought to Cindy Landacre, Tabor School of Business, ADM/Scovill 105 before you are considered enrolled in the class.

The Immigrant Experience in Paris (IN 350 or FR481) Cheryl Toman. Dec. 28- Jan. 12, 2008.

For this 3-credit course taught in English on-site in Paris, you will be exposed to various aspects of literature, social realities, culture, and the arts of Frances' immigrant population. The class will read and discuss works by prominent authors of Sub-Saharan Africa, the Maghreb/Mashrek, and Vietnam, and often meet with the authors themselves. Each student will debate and explore issues such as polygamy, religious tolerance, feminism, racism, and other aspects of a multicultural society. The total cost of the trip is $2,395 which includes round trip air fare from Chicago, lodging in Paris along with most meals, tuition for three credits, and various course fees.

The Culture and Literature of Chile (Register for one of the following: SP350, EN340, IN350, or IN203) Carmen Aravena and Michael O'Conner. January 1-14, 2008.

These interdisciplinary courses will examine the poetry of Pablo Neruda and Gabriela Mistral in the context of Chilean culture, history, and politics. Students will participate in discussions and workshops both at Millikin and in Chile, where they will also visit significant places in Neruda’s and Mistral’s lives. Students will visit museums, attend cultural events, keep a daily journal, conduct research in Chilean libraries, and write a research essay. The January 2007 course.

World Business from a European Perspective (MK481 or IN350) Todd Ranney. Jan.1-14, 2008

In January 2005 and 2006, students from Millikin traveled through Europe by train visiting business from global Fortune 500 corporations (such as Microsoft, Intel, Pfizer and Schlumberger) to small entrepreneurial start-ups.  For more on both trips, see http://faculty.millikin.edu/~tranney.  This January, we will travel through France, Spain, and the Netherlands.  The group will visit with and learn from executives and business owners from industry-leading companies in each country.  The topics will include world trade, product marketing and branding globally and locally.  The group will participate in a round-table discussion on air at a bi-lingual radio station in Madrid.  Cultural visits will include the Louvre Museum, Eiffel Tower, Place of  Versailles, and Notre Dame Cathedral (all in Paris), Prado Museum and Plaza Mayor (Madrid), and the medieval city of Toledo.

International Service Learning: The Dominican Republic (IN350) Larry Troy. Jan 3-12, 2008.

        This course will be available for credit as an option for students participating in the Breakaway service trip to Dajabon, Dominican Republic during January 2008.  Students will:

1.      Come to understand the people and history of the DR in a Caribbean and global context
2.      Learn how to be participant observers and develop skills in experiential learning
3.      Achieve new learning about self and culture
4.      Reflect on their service experiences in the context of the literature on service learning.

Breakaway will have weekly meetings throughout the Fall semester.  Students enrolled in this course for credit will be required to do extra reading and writing throughout Fall 2007 and then will be required to meet again after the trip at the beginning of the Spring 2008 semester.  They will also meet with the instructor daily while “in country.”

Travel expenses for this course will not be billed through the Student Service Center, because the expenses will be paid from the $700 each student is required to fundraise before the trip.

In Pursuit of the Presidency (PO360) Mark Wrighton. January 6-11, 2008.

      Prerequisite:  PO100 or PO105.
 
Students will participate in the first week of the Washington Center’s Inside Washington ’08 program.  The program looks at “how presidential hopefuls pursue the nation’s most prominent elected office, Chief Executive of the United States of America.  This seminar also scrutinizes the influential roles of national and state parties, lobbyists, pollsters, and consultants.  Campaign strategists, party officials, and veterans of past campaigns will analyze the nation’s most grueling and high stakes race through a series of stimulating discourses.” (TWC materials).  This is an unique opportunity to learn about the electoral process from those whose job it is to integrate theory with practice. Expenses: $2,965 including tuition, program fee and housing, plus airfare and meals.

Cultura y Civilizacion del Caribe Hispánico (SP350) Luis Peralta. Jan. 2-14, 2008.   
      Prerequisite: SP223.
     

Taught mostly in Spanish, this course will present an updated overview of the political and social economic situation of the Hispanic countries of the Caribbean: Cuba, Puerto Rico and The Dominican Republic. Students will evaluate the importance and impact of these countries in the region in the sessions presented. The course studies the different variations of the Spanish Language in the Caribbean, and the contributions of the indigenous cultures to the enrichment of the language. Travel will be to the Dominican Republic. Total cost, including tuition: $2,358 plus meals. Deadline for sign up is on October 15, 2007, including deposit payment of $500.00.   The January 2007 course Canceled because of low enrollment.

Educational Internship (ED172; IN350)  Ray Boehmer & Christie Ferguson. Jan. 3-11, 2008. (The IN350 is 3 credits. The ED172 is a 1 credit internship. You may take one or both.)

Global studies courses explore the fundamental diversity and interconnectedness of the world. In this course, students will reach beyond the United States as they travel to Santiago and Santo Domingo, the two largest cities in the Dominican Republic. Prior to the trip, students will explore the history and culture of the Dominican Republic through course readings, guest lectures, discussions, and research.  During the trip, students will gain firsthand experience through field excursions to cultural sites, spending time at local schools, listening to guest lectures, and home-stays with local families.  After the trip, students will reflect on their field experience through a summative reflection paper and presentation.  School of Education required internship hours will be earned in schools in the DR. Students teaching in the DR in March 2005 Canceled because of low enrollment.

Business Immersion Course in Brazil (MG481) Mark Munoz. January 4-12, 2008.

This course is still in the planning stages. It will entail taking 12 students on a Business Immersion Course under the theme "International Entrepreneurship." The course will be conducted by the University of Fortaleza, Brazil.  Overall total expenses will be approx. $3,500 per student, plus tuition. Canceled because of low enrollment.

Student loans are with very few exceptions the only source of financial aid available for immersion courses. Please check with the Student Service Center to find out what loan types are available to you.
