Student Virus Protection Policy
The Information Technology Department provides instructions to students
for connecting their personal computer to the Millikin network, installing
email software, and downloading McAfee Anti-virus software.
The IT webpage /it/TechServices/Virus/
contains several links to fixes for known
viruses and a link to download the McAfee
Anti-virus software. If a student’s
computer is connected to Millikin’s
network and logs into the network, it will
automatically be updated with the latest data
files about viruses and will be protected.
These webpages are continuously updated with
information about new virus outbreaks. The
IT Department will also send out email notices
to the Millikin community through the Announcements
Listserv with alerts for newfound widespread
viruses.
Notices in email about viruses from persons other than members of the
IT Department should be confirmed with the IT Help Desk. The above mentioned
web page has links to listings of virus hoaxes to check the validity of
warnings.
If a student owned computer contains one or more of the following programs,
the IT Department will not be responsible for troubleshooting or helping
to fix virus problems on a student owned computer. The programs must be
removed before the Help Desk will assist in troubleshooting problems with
viruses. This list is not all inclusive, there may be additional programs
such as Adware or other file/music sharing programs that must be removed
before receiving assistance.

Students must take precautions to protect their personal computer from
virus attacks. By downloading McAfee Anti-virus software and limiting
access to their computer from outside sources, they will minimize their
risk from viruses.
If a student refuses to follow the above standard in protecting their
personal computer from viruses, and they are found to be spreading a computer
virus on campus, their computer access will be shut off until their computer
is cleaned of viruses.
It is the responsibility of the student to install the antivirus software
and clean their personal computer of any viruses. The IT Help Desk will
assist with information in how to do that but will not be responsible
for cleaning a student owned computer of viruses.
