Mission Statement: Millikin University’s New Musicals mission is to foster original music theatre works by emerging writers and composers and to serve those writing teams to help them further develop their work. We create an environment where the focus is on the writers’ collaborative process with creative artists in an educational setting giving the participants an associative relationship with the collaborative process between the artist, the art form, and the professional world.
Recent New Work History: In January 2007 Millikin teamed with ANMT producing 4 new 30 minute musicals. January 2008 we teamed with Theatre Building Chicago producing 4 new pieces collaborating on development with the artistic teams. January 2009 we workshopped dani girl by Chris Dimond & Michael Kooman and Appalachian Trails by Jeff Thomson and Jordan Mann. January 2010 a new work by Chris Dimond & Michael Kooman will be workshopped and presented at Millikin and in Chicago.
Involvement with New Work: We are interested in experiences where we can serve the development of the piece; workshops, readings and full productions where artistry is provided by Millikin faculty and students.
What we look for in New Work projects: It goes without saying that we are looking for excellence in craft (book, lyrics, music), but beyond that we’re looking for a good fit in terms of material, development trajectory, and the needs and expectations of the writing team.
