Magazine Case Review

Jeremy Johnson
Stacey Randol
George Costillos

From the site’s conception the group identified with the design principles implemented in the design of the magazine. These principles were facsimiled on the web and results in the look of our site. We came to many mutual decisions as well as disagreements on mechanics, but ultimately we reached consensus after amends.

Our opening page features Japanese music and an flash animation before prompting the visitor to “Enter” the page. The “Mayfly” flush left written vertically was copied, on the right are the navigation links which take the visitor throughout the page. There are six links to six pages in our small but informative site.

Chapter 8

This chapter is about tracing images. This chapter thouroughly enhanced my skills in designing a website. The first thing I learned was how to apply a tracing image and then how to add layers. Next was converting layers to tables and tables to layers. This gave me a better idea of how to make a website look more professional and clean. The next and final exercise was layout tables and layout cells. It took me a while, but I got the idea of what to do. This was one exercise I needed to do over and over again to remember how to do it.

Chapter 7

Finally I realized how they make tables on websites. I originally had no idea how to make one but after reading this chapter, I know it’s not that hard to do. The thing I like about this is that it makes the website look cleaner and easier to navigate (plus more user friendly). I also like the fact that you can manipulate the colors and borders to make it fit in with your site. I will definitely incorporate this chapter into my main website page as long as my bookmarks site.

resume critique

Resume #1
http://www.geocities.com/aljons/writing_resume.html

This has to be the worst resume I think I’ve ever seen before. It provides me with the basic information i.e. name, address, bio but then you get to the real information. First of all, the page is very basic nothing too exciting or eye catching (except for his creepy picture). It shows no job experience whatsoever other than his published works. In my opinion it’s way to long, too much to scroll down to read. There’s no real basis on this resume.

Resume #2
http://www.fionacannon.net/resume_f/index.htm

This resume is a great example. She has all the basic information but also has a personal greeting when you access her page. The layout is very nice has a few eye-catching graphics along with tabs up at the top to access the resume information. It’s also been recently updated. Her skills page is one I liked. I has a rating system to show how excelled in each program rather than just typing it out. And if companies don’t want to look at all this and get straight to the resume, she has a word version of it as well.

Bookmark Page Overview

The page I’m looking over is Megan Kovacs’ bookmarks site. I accessed it from her index page. That worked perfectly. The layout of the page is very good. It deals with teaching children and the links and sites she has in there has great programs for that. Now onto the site orientation. The first thing I noticed on the site was the “1+6=7” picture. I didn’t really know what the site was about because the title didn’t stick out enough. It was only until I read a little into it that I realized it was a site dedicated to teaching kids. After that, it was an awesome layout and design. The pictures and animations add to the fun. I could see where kids could have a good time with it.

The navigational aspect was excellent. All the back to top links worked as well as the navigational links at the top. Most of the websites connected except for one (but I think that it’s my computer not the site). The only thing I could find to be changed was when you click on the top navigational links. While it does say something about the desired area, it’s not apparent enough (in my opinion). Say I clicked on “math”, then when I get down to the math part, it should say “math” or if I clicked on the “social studies” link, it should say “social studies” or something to let me know I got there. It sort of has it, but I still wasn’t sure if I reached the right place until I had read the captions next to the picture (that just might be me being picky).

Overall she did this correct and very well. All the links work, and I love all the pictures on there. Some even made me laugh. Other than some minor details, the site is user friendly and creative. I liked it a lot

Chapter 6

This chapter is based around typography. the first exercise called adding and formatting HTML text provided me with a basic understanding of how to modify the plain text on the page to fit how I want it. Font lists were pretty basic. I understood them right away. The same with the aligning text exercise. One part that I had a difficult time understanding was the formatting text and tables. After doing it a few times, though, I got the hang of it. The major thing I had trouble getting was how to create flash text. I had to read through it numerous times and redo it numerous times before I even had begun to understand what it was and how to do it.

Chapter 5

This chapter is all about linking. I tried to link on my own the hard way, but in the first section of the chapter I learned how to easily link using the point to file method. Next I moved on to linking to new source files. I had to read it twice a few times to figure it out but I got it. Browse for File and Link History was the next section. It showed me how use the link history to reproduce the links throughout many pages in my site. The creating email links section was very easily mastered. Named anchors helped me to figure out how to use the back to top link on my page. The image maps section showed me how to make an image with links embedded in it. The final secion, linking to files, taughted me how to, well, link to files. This was relatively easy. Over all this chapter was very insightful on how to link my page. (late)

Chapter 4

This was my first time using the Dreamweaver application. I had previously used Frontpage and I must say that Dreamweaver blows Frontpage out of the water. This chapter was about the basics of making a website. The first thing I learned how to do is define the website. I then moved on to creating and saving new documents. I also figured out how to add images to the site to spruce it up a bit and put text onto the site so its not just a blank page. Along with adding text and images, I learned how to center them as well. Page properties gave me a little trouble, but I figured it out. The last part of the chapter taught me how to combine links with images. (late)
