Learning Review

User Knowledge- During this semester the knowledge I already possessed combined with the skills I’ve newly acquired make me a more well rounded graphic designer. Although admittedly still a neophyte in Web Design I have more rounded web skills having some experience now in FrontPage and Dreamweaver. Of course the latter being more powerful and more enjoyable. Now I’m just looking forward to grasping Flash and being able to integrate that into my Web works and in the near future being able to create flash cartoons and animations and posting to the web.

Web Design Knowledge- WOW Where do I start I learned so much this semester I wasn’t even able to implement it all into my works. From simple things like linking files to flash buttons to my one attempt at CSS *MCHS Site* (Which after mastery makes web site creation a more streamlined process) I’m really excited to get my feet wet because a lot of people I know want me to make websites for them and are offering monetary compensation which makes any undergrad smile incessantly. In particular I have to say I have a affinity for layers maybe it’s just my mind state from working in Photoshop so much over the years.

Project Knowledge- All of the projects completed over the course of the semester permeate more upon reflection now. I can say that the Mayfly project was the most challenging in retrospect to the latter projects just due to my lack of knowledge in juxtaposition to the knowledge gained as time continued. In September all of the assignments presented seemed a little daunting but now after completing them I can say all of them were instrumental in my grasp of the just a few of the preliminary features of Dreamweaver.

Tutoring Knowledge- My personal tutoring knowledge may be more extensive than any of my classmates just from the perspective of being the Mac lab tutor. I had the opportunity to help people in Web Design while simultaneously grasping the concepts myself. In addition all the people I helped from Stephanie’s classes, Dr. George’s classes, Ed’s classes and just random visitors to the lab. I can say that my experiences were pleasurable and it feels good to educate people and watch the gears turn in their heads as they grasp concepts presented to them.

project

For my project I have decided to do it on Collegiate wrestling (Folkstyle) and it's integration into MMA (mixed martial arts) mainly UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship).

client project

MCHM Society Reflection

Macon County Historical Musuem

Our version of the Macon County Historical Site implements the features requested by the client while maintaining aesthetic values. The site was designed with the clients concerns in mind (not giving to much information to the viewer in hopes of fostering attendance). The site is similar to the existing site but personalized to our visit to the Macon County Historical Museum. We feature 7 main links: Home, About Us, Our Mission, Museum & Prairie Village, Events Calendar, Community Links and Educational Links.

The Home Page features a reoccurring image of the statue of Abraham Lincoln being accompanied by George. Below the picture features a small gallery of Jeremy and George’s visit to the locale. Also imperative to note is the looking for Lincoln logo at the bottom of the page which is a link to the official looking for Lincoln page. About Us gives the viewer a brief history of the establishment. Our Mission states M.C.H.M.’s mission across the top of the page. Museum & Prairie Village states the institutions hours of operation. Event’s Calendar showcases current events at MCHS. Community Links features links to organizations and individuals of interest. Educational Links are links to educational materials for teachers and students 5th through 8th grade broke down into sections for simple categorization.

Hands On Training Tutorial Responses

Chapter 13

Chapter 13 was all about forms, making them in order to collect the desired information from the viewer of the web based form you (web designer) creates. This was one of the shorter chapter's section wise with only 3 sections (working with form objects, creating forms and creating jump menu's) but there was a lot of information and steps inbetween.

Magazine Case Review

Jeremy Johnson
Stacey Randol
George Costillos

From the site’s conception the group identified with the design principles implemented in the design of the magazine. These principles were facsimiled on the web and results in the look of our site. We came to many mutual decisions as well as disagreements on mechanics, but ultimately we reached consensus after amends.

Our opening page features Japanese music and an flash animation before prompting the visitor to “Enter” the page. The “Mayfly” flush left written vertically was copied, on the right are the navigation links which take the visitor throughout the page. There are six links to six pages in our small but informative site.

Chapter CSS

Cascading Style Sheets. It detailed the specifications of CSS, actually learning how to cascade styles and why they are useful as pose to changing options 1 by 1, The anatomy of a style sheet, understanding how CSS's Panels,Selectors (ID, Type) how to create the aforementioned creating class sectors and defining CSS Rollovers and Psuedo Classes. This was a very informative chapter and helps us (The class) delve deeper into understanding more of the design aspects of the web and the powerful tools that CSS provides for us.

Chapter 10

Chapter 10 was about Rollovers and using them effectively to add visual flair and information to sites when the user rolls over them. The chapter lays out simple rollovers, animated rollovers, creating pointer rollovers, creating Multiple-Event rollovers, creating Flash buttons and inserting a Navagation Bar Rollover

web resume critique

I choose to reveiw Carrie's Resume and I found it impressive. Navigation throughout the entire document was sound with links clearly posted at the top of the page. Her information is placed in a standard resume format with links going "back to the top" under every sub-section. She was extensive in listing her affiliations and proficiencies (excellent info for potential employers)Her listing of relevant Graphic Design Courses and list of program utilization is also I also applaud her color choices for the text lying ontop of a black background with the exception of white they all create contrast although not as stark at the black & white is.

Chapter 8

Chapter 8 was about Layout. I learned techniques to position and organize things better on a webpage... I learned how to apply a tracing image, add layers, convert layers to tables, converting Tables to Layers, Layout Tables and Layout Cells. Everything was fairly straight foward and this chapter didn't take me very long to get through.

Chapter 7

Chapter 7 was about Tables and using them to create and manipulate text on the web. It elaborated in detail on Changing the border of a table, (similar to Xcel's), Working with Transperant GIF's, Sorting a Table,Changing te Colro Scheme, Creating and Modifying a table, Aligning Images and Text with Tables, Precentage Based Table Alignment, Seemless Image Assembly, Combining Pixels and Percentages, Inserting Tab Deliminated Data (Although I found discrepency in the method of this once again between the book and our version of the software).

resume critique

http://www.klab.caltech.edu/~moran/cv.php

This is the link to the site that I found aesthetically pleasing. It was simple but well executed. I liked how he (Moran) used the title bar at the top of the page to direct the viewer to other pertinent info easily. (His personal info, Homepage and an explaination of who he is, his education and experiences and the services that he is able to provide.

http://www.worldtrans.org/fresume.html

The above link is to the resume that I found problematic. Althought it certainly conveys the standard info you would come to find in a resume, Funchs' is unorthodox and not in the creative way. His picture and personal info is flush left while the rest of the info is flush right. Perhaps it's due to the fact that Flemming is Dutch born but then again that has no relevance to web design. Other than it's heterogeneous mix of unconventionality and mediocrity his information is well organized.

bookmarks case review

My partner for the peer bookmark critique case is Stacey Randol. I found in her book mark the the orientation was handled well. All of her links were identified at the top of the page and elaborated upon as the page scrolled down. Navagation wasn't problematic. She used two anchors between information to direct the reader to top of the page with ease. Quality of the site is great considering that she, I and most of the class are neophytes. On a numerical scale of 1-5 I would rate Stacey's site a 4.4

Chapter 6

I was having a few difficulties with Chapter 6 (Mostly things weren't following as they should...with the discrepancy in the version we have in the lab and the book) I had problems in 6.5 Color Schemes, 6.6 (Viewing Font Tags) and 6.7 locating the HTML Styles Window negating those I learned about Typography in Dreamweaver: adding and formatting HTML text, Font Lists, Aligning Text, Ordered, Unordered, and Definition Lists, Formatting Text in tables and Creating Flash Text.

I sent an email earlier about my site being http://www.newgrounds.com I'd also like to add to that http://www.ign.com which is a video game site of all systems, genres, codes and much more from the last 3 decades.

My favorite website would be http://www.newgrounds.com This is a website that is constantly updated and features Flash submissions from registered users. (Which I express much intrest in) The site is generally humorous in nature and I frequent it quite regularly to try and obtain at least a daily chuckle.

The website I have chosen to analyze in this document is www.newgrounds.com. Newgrounds, for the remainder of the document I will refer to it by “NG”, is the original and largest flash portal on the web. NG is a website headquartered in Perkasie, Pennsylvania, USA and created in 1995 that primarily hosts Adobe Flash animated films and games. The site was created and is owned by Tom Fulp, who still maintains every aspect and regularly produces in-house content. NG allows its users to submit their own flash movies, games, and music, and view submissions from other users. Over the years NG has grown significantly, and must rely on the cooperation of its visitors. Visitors are encouraged to review the submissions. A rating system produces lists that direct visitors to the most popular flash movies and allows the site designers to easily locate any material that might be considered for deletion or promotion. The site now has over 1 million registered members and over 300,000 flash submissions.

NG’s site Orientation is wonderful. From the HOME page you are exposed tables, links and colorful graphics. The Orientation- is executed well as that There is a fair amount of advertising being that the site is (for the most part) non-profit. The Navagation- everything is pretty easy to find on the site and even has a search engine through it’s archive of flash files and games. The Content: is rich in this site…daily updates of new submissions to keep the cycle of “Creation, Posting and Reviewing” submissions in the categories of Graphics, Sound, Interactivity, Style, Violence, and Humor.

Bolter Chapter 1

I'm not sure if my question is rhetorical or not but..after reading the Introduction..."Will we as a society come to embrace electronic text and or hypertext as a new medium for literacy or can both standardized print and the aforementioned continue to peacefully coexist without either one gaining dominance ?" —Jeremy

Chapter 5

Chapter 5 was on Linking and I learned how to link files to locations multiple ways (As to use the method I personally perfer). Chapter 5 covered Linking with Point to File, Linking to New Source Files, Browsing for Files and the Link history, Creating email links, Naming Anchors, Image Maps, andLinking to Files. I'm starting to grasp the concept of some of the features of Dreamweaver...I can't wait until I'm well enough acclimated to the program to be able to apply the skills I'm learning.

Chapter 4

Chapter 4 was my introduction to Dreamweaver, at the completion of this Chapter I successfully grasped the concepts that the tutorial introduced Such as Inserting Images, Inserting Text, Centering Images and Text, Modifying Page Properties, Creating Links with Images and Text, and Meta Text(If it it was cumbersome...before figuring out that configurations had changed) I have no questions and think I comprehended all the information covered in Chapter 4
