Millikin University - Decatur, IL
Press Releases
Blue Connection, Millikin University's student-run retail art gallery, is pleased to welcome alumna Erica Reese '11 as its Summer Artist-in-Residence from June 1 through July 27, 2013.

Reese will work on site at Blue Connection from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily creating original artwork and interacting with gallery patrons. Reese added, "As a painter, I am interested in the process of imitation, and how some people embrace this idea, while others will do anything in their power to disconnect from similarities and characteristics in which they cannot control."

Reese's paintings invite the viewer to consider the idea of imitation. She uses her experiences as a twin to drive her process. "My painting process is often visceral and intuitive," states Reese. "Imitation as traces of memories and feelings accumulate in my work and are layered on the canvas. Construction and deconstruction become a part of my painting process."

Erica is currently completing her MFA in painting & drawing at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Her work has been on display in galleries across the state of Illinois including Decatur, Springfield, Jacksonville, Carbondale, and Peoria as well as St. Louis, Mo. For additional information on Erica's work, visit www.ericareese.com.

Opened in 2003, Blue Connection is Millikin University's student-run, retail art gallery. The gallery features artwork by Millikin students, faculty, and alumni artists. The business also serves as a laboratory experience for Millikin University's Arts & Entrepreneurship program. The program utilizes curricular-based activities and student-run ventures to give students a live laboratory experience in developing, launching, and growing a business.

Erica Reese will work on site from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturdays at Blue Connection, located at 117 N. Water St. in Decatur. In addition, Reese's work will be featured during Blue Connection's After 5 Live events on Friday, July 5 from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. and Friday, August 9 from 5 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Millikin University's Blue Connection will host "Paws for a Cause" presented by Carriage House Press and the Decatur & Macon County Animal Shelter Foundation (DMCASF) on Friday, May 3 from 5 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. in Downtown Decatur. The event will include live print demonstrations using both traditional hand burnishing techniques and an unconventional approach with a steamroller.

Millikin University Art Professor Lyle Salmi and student artists from Carriage House Press created woodcut prints from photos taken of adoptable pets at DMCASF. Select framed prints will be available during a silent auction inside Blue Connection from 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. with all proceeds supporting DMCASF.

When asked why he wanted to organize this event, Salmi said, "I wanted to move Carriage House Press events out into the public arena so students could experience the impact and potential connections made within the community by pairing their respective artistic skills with organizations for public events. I own three rescue dogs from the shelter, and I am committed to events for a good cause, so DMCASF was the best organization to start with."

Carriage House Press artists will also take over North Water Street to create giant woodcut prints using a steamroller provided by B&W Asphalt Paving in Decatur. "My idea was to take print making out of the studio and to the streets, literally," remarked Salmi. "Artists often create plates that are too large to fit through a traditional press, so they've found creative ways to make the prints. In the '60s people would run them over with a car, but the steamroller has become somewhat of a subculture of the traditional print making process."

Carriage House Press hosted their first steamroller printing event in September 2012. "We received overwhelmingly positive feedback from folks who attended the event," remarked Salmi. "If one wants to do printmaking out in the street, one must have a platform from which to capture people's attention - nothing does that quite like a steamroller."

"Paws for a Cause" will be held in conjunction with the Spring Art Fair. Additional activities throughout the evening include:

Perceptions Public Art Display

Nearly 20 graduating seniors from Millikin University's Bachelor of Arts program in the College of Fine Arts will present their art displays that analyze various perceptions of Decatur. In addition to visual installations, performances will be held throughout the evening on North Water Street.

"Students spent the semester shaping their projects through Decatur tours, collection of collateral and scrap materials, and conversations with community members," stated Millikin Lecturer of Arts & Entrepreneurship William "B.J." Warren. "They are discovering a different side of Decatur and coming up with some creative ways to share their findings."

Presentations during the event will range from original Decatur song compositions to multimedia dance presentations to a fashion show of found objects.

Decatur Public School District 61 Middle & High School Art Show

Decatur Public School District 61 will feature work from its middle school and high school students in a joint spring show on the third floor of the Madden Arts Center. The business also serves as a laboratory experience for Millikin University's Arts & Entrepreneurship program. The program utilizes curricular-based activities and student-run ventures to give students a live laboratory experience in developing, launching, and growing a business.

Millikin University students were recognized for their outstanding efforts at the 13th annual Self-Employment in the Arts (SEA) Conference held Feb. 22-23 in Lisle, Ill. Students received accolades at the SEA Conference's Juried Art Show & Business Pitch Competition. Twenty-one students and seven faculty members from Millikin University attended the SEA Conference.

The SEA Conference's Juried Art Show featured 28 works of art from 18 college artists, including eight Millikin students. Amanda Sagan, a senior from Geneva, Ill., won the People's Choice Award and a Juror's Award for her artwork titled "Bear Suit."

"My professor encouraged me to submit my artwork "Bear Suit" for the art show, and to my surprise I won the Juror's Award and the People's Choice Award," remarked Sagan. "The SEA Conference is an experience any student in the arts should consider to attend. It allows students to see a glimpse into their future and it provides advice on how to be successful. The SEA Conference teaches valuable lessons for different students and majors."

Alexa Snyder, a senior from Springfield, Ill., also received a Juror's Award for her artwork titled "Time Lapse."

"Each year at the SEA Conference, I look forward to meeting new people, making new connections, and receiving advice from artists and entrepreneurs who are making a living in the world," remarked Snyder. "The desire to learn is infectious when you walk into the building. There are so many great sessions and speakers featured throughout the two-day program."

The SEA Juried Art Show was judged by Todd D. Reed, a painter and educator who currently teaches studio-art courses at McHenry County College, and the College of Lake County. Reed is actively producing and has exhibited regularly since completing his master's degree in fine arts in 2008.

The SEA Conference's Business Pitch Competition featured preselected college students presenting their businesses to a panel of judges. Lauren Lewis, a senior from Mendota, Ill., won second place for her business, double eLLe COMEDY, a management company that provides independent talents with the success of performing and recording comedy. The business focuses on developing the independent artist and being the premier hub.

The mission of the SEA is to provide educational resources to help aspiring artists gain the entrepreneurial knowledge and skills needed to establish and maintain a career as an independent artist. The SEA Conference is centered on the idea that artists who have business skills, market knowledge, a network, and access to resources will succeed as a professional artist. Through artist-led panels and discussions, the SEA Conference helps students, artists, and educators develop these tools.

Blue Connection will feature the children's books of Millikin University's student-run publishing company Bronze Man Books this February. The event scheduled for Friday, Feb. 1 from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. will include the promotion of "Ants in the Band Room," "OOPS! Did I Say That?" and "Monsters Don’t Read." Artwork by illustrator Amy Kuhl Cox '98 will also be featured alongside Bronze Man Books' newest release "Am I Like My Daddy?" This event will be held in conjunction with the opening of "Art of the Comic Book" at the Decatur Area Arts Council's Anne Lloyd Gallery.

Amy Kuhl Cox’s illustrations are digital drawings resembling stained glass panels. Her process begins with conceptual drawings that are then hand-drawn with pencil and subsequently inked with Pigma Micron pens. Each intersection between lines is contoured to resemble leading between stained glass panels. The drawings are then scanned and completed in Photoshop using the computer to "paint" the colors and textures from the stained glass into each "pane" within the drawing.

"Am I Like My Daddy?" by Marcy Blesy '94 and illustrated by Amy Kuhl Cox, is an important book in the children's grief genre. The book focuses on years after the death, when a maturing child, Grace, is reprocessing her grief. She uses the process of journaling to discover more about her deceased father. In "Monsters Don't Read" by Heather Champion '09 and illustrated by Chris Knudson '10, the main character, Monster, resists learning to read with the rest of his class. But as the rest of his class enjoys the world of books, Monster begins to feel left out.

"OOPS! Did I Say That?" is a guide to positive support for cancer patients. Inspired by her own experience with cancer at the age of 14, author Sarah K. Johnson '08 created this book in hopes of helping the caregivers to relay their genuine concern for a patient. Written and illustrated by Laura Podeschi '06, "Ants in the Band Room" is the story of a troop of ants who explore various musical instruments in search of a suitable home. The book includes an audio book with musical composition by Millikin Associate Professor of Music, Randy Reyman, and narration by Interim Dean of Millikin University’s College of Fine Arts, Laura Ledford.

A student-owned and operated press located on Millikin University's campus in Decatur, Ill., Bronze Man Books is dedicated to integrating quality design and meaningful content. The company exposes undergraduate students to the process of publishing by combining the theory of writing, publishing, editing and designing with the practice of running a book publishing company.

Millikin University’s Arts & Entrepreneurship (A&E) Program received high accolades at the 2013 United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) Conference held Jan. 10-13 in San Francisco, Calif. The Arts & Entrepreneurship Program won the USASBE 2013 Outstanding Specialty Entrepreneurship Program Award for offering a high quality and innovative program with the purpose of educating future generations of entrepreneurs in a specialty area.

“The significance of this award is the development of collaboration with Millikin’s College of Fine Arts and the Tabor School of Business,” remarked Sharon Alpi, Director of the Millikin University Center for Entrepreneurship. “The real key is pure collaboration – we are collaborating on common outcomes, common goals, and continuing to foster creativity and innovation by both the faculty and the students.”

Launched in 2003, Millikin University’s Arts & Entrepreneurship Program is a six-credit course sequence providing performance-based learning opportunities for students to practice self-employment. A&E integrates disciplines from the Tabor School of Business and the College of Fine Arts. Students develop, launch, and grow a business. Rather than learn before doing, students are required to learn while doing by first starting a micro-venture in the A&E Program’s introductory course. Students then design and execute growth strategies for one of five student-run ventures.

“This truly speaks to the faculty who lead courses and student ventures in the College of Fine Arts,” remarked Alpi. “We have a specialty that lifts up our nationally-recognized College of Fine Arts with entrepreneurship. The laboratories of practice are real, live ventures within the Fine Arts disciplines and we provide authentic ownership experiences.”

In order to be considered for the award, Millikin’s Arts & Entrepreneurship Program submitted a self-nomination in October 2012. The A&E Program was then selected as a finalist at which time the program had to submit additional supporting materials. Representatives of the Arts & Entrepreneurship Program presented the supporting materials in front of judges at the USASBE 2013 Conference.

“One of the important things the judges took away from our presentation was the sustainability of the program and the impact,” remarked B.J. Warren, Instructor of Entrepreneurship. “This program has been on campus for over 10 years, and while it’s evolved based on the needs of our students, it has continued to be an integral part of majors across campus.”

USASBE is the premiere, professional, entrepreneurship education organization dedicated to advancing the discipline of entrepreneurship. USASBE has over 1,000 members from universities and colleges, for-profit businesses, nonprofit organizations, and the public sector, that share a common commitment to fostering entrepreneurial attitudes and behaviors. Each year USASBE awards the Outstanding Specialty Entrepreneurship Award to a program that demonstrates innovation, quality, comprehensiveness, sustainability, depth of support, and impact. Previous recipients of the award include the University of Portland, Rice University, George Washington University, and Purdue University.

“Entrepreneurship is important, it will continue to be important, and it’s going to be important to cultivate that attitude of reasoning, thinking and opportunity for any major,” remarked Alpi. “The key thing for what we want to do is to create an opportunity for our students to have ownership experience in a real life business.”

The event is free and open to the public.

“The trade show allows the Decatur community to meet current students who are actively running their own businesses and support them through purchase of their goods and services,” remarked B.J. Warren, Millikin instructor of entrepreneurship and Blue Connection manager. “The event provides an opportunity for students to network with other student owners who are facing similar challenges.”

Businesses featured during the event will include Millikin’s student-run ventures First Step Records, Blue Connection, Pipe Dreams Studio Theatre, Carriage House Press, Blue Satellite Press, Bronze Man Books, and Ignite Studios.
