Calling all jazz lovers! The Millikin University School of Music is pleased to present the annual Fall Jazz Concert on Tuesday, November 17 at 7:30 pm. in Albert Taylor Theatre.
The evening’s performance will feature the talents of Millikin’s Jazz Bands I and II. The concert is free and open to the public.
The concert will kick off with Jazz Band II, under the direction of Dr. Perry Rask, associate professor of music. Their performance will feature a variety of popular jazz favorites, including Cole Porter’s “It’s All Right With Me”, and Sammy Nestico’s “Queen Bee” and “The Blues Machine”. Jazz Band I, led by Randy Reyman, associate professor of music, will follow with selections including “Almost Like Being In Love” by Lennie Neihaus and Duke Ellington’s “Concerto for Cootie”.
“Our annual concert is sure to please even the most discerning jazz lovers,” remarked Reyman. “From newer hits to classic standards, the evening’s performance will have a little something for everyone.”
Millikin University’s Jazz Band I is the premiere jazz performance ensemble on campus, consisting of undergraduate students majoring in performance, music education, commercial music, and music business. They have performed at numerous jazz festivals in the Midwest and throughout the U.S. On several occasions, the group has been selected as an “outstanding band” at the Elmhurst Jazz Festival, one of the largest collegiate jazz festivals in the U.S. The band’s three CDs, “Easy to Love”, “Swingin’ Night and Day”, and “Signal Fires” are available from First Step Records. The band regularly tours regionally and has performed in the Dominican Republic on three different occasions.
Millikin University's Jazz Band II is open to newer jazz students, and features some of Millikin’s brightest young musical talent. “They’re a hot young band this year,” remarked Rask. “I’m really enjoying my work with them.” The band performs regularly on campus and throughout Central Illinois. They will join Jazz Band I in attending the Central Illinois and the Elmhurst Jazz Festivals, and will participate in the Saturday Jazz Series this spring at Decatur restaurant Lock, Stock and Barrel.
