Millikin University will honor approximately 150 graduates at the 2009 Winter Commencement Ceremony on December 13, 2009 at 2 p.m. in the Kirkland Fine Arts Center. Graduates from Millikin’s traditional undergraduate program, adult degree completion program (PACE), and the Master of Science in Nursing program will be honored during the ceremony.
Dr. Richard A. Pacholski, emeritus professor of English, will deliver the commencement address.
Student speakers for the ceremony include Brett Morris of Vernon Hills, Ill., who will receive a B.F.A. in Theatre-Directing; and Chip Wallen of Decatur, Ill., who will receive a B.A. in elementary education from Millikin’s PACE program. The ceremony will feature performances by the Millikin Saxophone Quartet, directed by Dr. Perry Rask, associate professor of music; and the Millikin Chamber Chorale, directed by Dr. Guy Forbes, associate professor of music.
During his 31 years at Millikin University, Dr. Pacholski taught over 20 different courses in subjects ranging from Shakespeare to Holocaust literature. Prior to his tenure at Millikin, he taught at Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is the author of numerous publications, including six books.
At Millikin, Dr. Pacholski received numerous honors for his teaching, including the Warren F. Hardy Distinguished Professor of English and the Distinguished Faculty Lecturer at the 1994 Honors Convocation. He was named Millikin University’s 1994 Professor of the Year in a national competition sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
Since his retirement, Dr. Pacholski has served as “scholar-in-residence” at Mississippi University for Women, and speaks regularly at public events and organizations. In 2003, Dr. Pacholski was named to Millikin University’s Medallion Society, which honors 100 living alumni and faculty “who have had the greatest impact on the institution” during its first 100 years.
