Interactive social resume leads to marketing position for Millikin graduate

Body:

Millikin University communications graduate Jannic Nielssen '12 has taken marketing to a new level in terms of job hunting. Nielssen recently launched an interactive social media resume in April 2013 titled "KickJannic" that was inspired by Kickstarter, an online platform for creative projects. The goal of the project was to connect, network, and share his resume in an innovative way with potential employers.

This creative technique of promotion helped Nielssen land a position in New York City with Thrillist Media Group in May 2013. Nielssen not only turned to social media to create this opportunity, but hopes that it changes the way resumes are viewed and approached.

"I came up with the idea after seeing so many others take the out of the box route to their job hunt with great success, for example the Amazon resume," remarked Nielssen. "I chose Kickstarter as my basis because it served as an excellent metaphor for what I was in need of."

Visitors on Nielssen's website, www.kickjannic.com, could both watch and read about his professional experiences. A video at the top of the page highlights his skills and the strengths he would bring to a future employer. Already achieving a strong social media presence, Nielssen's online resume described additional details such as a high Klout score and SEO rankings for his personal brand, accumulating over nine million YouTube views through his original video creations, having a strong resume of social media efforts, and his experiences in event planning and advertising for collegiate events and professional internships.

A dual citizen of Jamaica and Norway, Nielssen's goal was to receive a job offer by May 1 or he would have left the United States.

"Kickstarter is about expressing a product, in my case me to the public, in which they decide if they want to support, but in my case, monetary funding would not make sense so I transformed the idea to social shares," remarked Nielssen. "This way I would get my resume into the sights of more people, eventually employers, through the vast social connections of people who share, similar to word of mouth marketing but on a digital level."

Nielssen is currently a marketing coordinator at Thrillist Media Group, a digital media company consisting of leading men's digital lifestyle publication www.Thrillist.com, members-only shopping club www.Jackthreads.com, and fashion, music and culture publication www.TheCrosbyPress.com. The three brands collectively reach over 5 million daily subscriptions, targeting a young, urban, male demographic locally and nationally, online and offline, through content and commerce. Nielssen began his position at Thrillist Media Group on June 3.

"I had a great introductory week, including a tour of the eclectic office and absorbing as much information I could about Thrillist Media Group," remarked Nielssen. "I can't wait to see what this venture has in store for me."

When asked about the future of interactive social media resumes Nielssen added, "If your career path calls for creativity or you can showcase yourself and your work, I say that it can't hurt. Most companies these days are so flooded with paper resumes that social resumes provide them with a breath of fresh air."

Millikin business class designs performance management system for local client

Body:

In business today, employee performance is critical. Having a system in place that measures and identifies employee performance is even more critical. Millikin University's Performance Management course in the Tabor School of Business addresses this very issue. It allows students the opportunity to use a model to create an effective and efficient performance management system each spring semester. However, this year's students had the rare opportunity to use classroom knowledge to aid an actual client by designing a performance management system for its employees; that client was Peerless Dry Cleaning and Restoration.

The primary goal of the project was to help Peerless clearly define and measure "world class service," and to develop a system that Peerless can use to identify performance gaps in service provider performances. Led by Dr. Susan Kruml, associate professor of management, the students took full advantage of the project by applying their understanding of performance management from lectures and discussions to a real-world situation.

"In the interest of performance learning, I've done client-based projects before, but this particular project had a lot more client involvement," remarked Kruml. "Typically, we get some kind of project from a client and then we work on it with the students throughout the semester and then deliver it to the client. This time we wanted more direct feedback from the client and we wanted the students more directly involved with the actual company."

The first phase of the project involved the students working in four teams -- two teams dedicated to the Peerless technicians, and two teams dedicated to the customer service representatives. Both teams for each job competed to produce the best first draft of the system. Each team received a grade on their first draft as well as feedback from Peerless Dry Cleaning and Restoration President Brad Wike, and Vice President Todd Garner. The teams then transitioned from four to two (one team for each job) therefore combining the best elements of the projects to produce the final products.

"This experience was truly a unique and positive one," remarked Aubri Barnes, a senior from Colfax, Ill. "It is rare to have the opportunity to take the skills and knowledge you learn in a classroom and use it for a real company, but that is exactly what the Performance Management course provided us. We were able to provide Peerless with a performance management system that would easily inform employees of what world class service was, and the opportunity to do that was unlike any other."

One of the priorities while designing the performance management system was developing a job description for the portion of the job related to delivering world class service. By doing so the students had to learn as much as they could about the company and its culture by attending employee and management meetings, job shadowing, and having conversations with employees.

"Working with Peerless on this project was completely different than any project I've ever worked on," remarked Kristan Couri, a junior from Decatur, Ill. "Not only did we have to learn the material from the class, but we also had to learn about Peerless, their culture, and most importantly, how to tie the information we were learning into what their company needed."

After developing a specific job description associated with world class service, the Millikin students designed evaluation tools using a Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scale (BARS) method, which provides a rating scale for employees based on specific behavioral expectations for each position.

Couri added, "Many things were learned along the way, but what I enjoyed learning about the most during this project was how a good performance appraisal system works. There is an entire process that goes along with evaluating your employees, and not only did we get to learn what that process is, but we got to create a custom-made performance management system for this company."

The final phase of the project touched on the importance of staying true to the Peerless mission statement as well as core values, new job descriptions, and completing 360 degree evaluations. The Millikin students presented their final project to the Peerless representatives on May 14 during finals week.

Dr. Kruml added, "The overall reaction from the Peerless representatives was good. Some of the information has to be digested, but the students were quick on their feet when they were asked questions during the presentation. The students not only learned how to design a performance management system, they also learned how to measure their own performance, how to conduct a performance appraisal, and how to work in teams."

Body:
Millikin University and Decatur Public School District 61 have teamed up once again to present the 2nd annual Students at Millikin Academic Summer Holiday (SMASH) Camp. The gifted camp for current and future middle school students will be held June 3 – July 12 at Millikin University. Campers will arrive between 8 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. with camp starting at 8:30 a.m. with the ceremonial "SMASHing of the Apple." Each day campers invent a new way to smash the apple as a nod to their collective goal to "smash" the traditional expectations of education.

During the six-week long duration of SMASH camp, campers will demonstrate the spirit of entrepreneurship in its many forms and work side-by-side with local companies and organizations to make new products, create value-added services, generate awareness around a critical topic, and produce an artistic piece for new audiences. Campers pick one career sector to concentrate on during camp. These sectors include Food Science, Energy, Visual Arts, and Media.

The following are descriptions of the SMASH Camp sectors:

Energy

Campers will collaborate with the City of Decatur to experiment and explore potential water purification, dredging, and collection solutions. Water usage and quality will become an increasing global issue in their future.

Visual Arts

Campers will be working with Millikin visual arts students and staff members and will tap into their entrepreneurial ventures to explore aesthetic opportunities in Decatur and beyond. Campers will be exploring various types of art and experiment with creation.

Food Science

This year in the Food Science sector, groups will work with food scientists to compete with each other while making the healthiest, tastiest brownie possible. Campers will also participate in iron chef competitions to create everything from appetizers to desserts.

Media

Campers will be able to explore the history of mass communication and get a head start on the communication strategies of the future. Campers will gain a better sense of their own voices and start to change the world around them through media.

The first week of camp consists of activities such as orientation, team-building, and technology training. Students will then stay with their sector group throughout the duration of camp. Each group will create meaningful, relevant solutions that have been brought forward by community partners.
