Blue Connection names Erica Reese '11 as Summer Artist-in-Residence

Body:
Blue Connection, Millikin University's student-run retail art gallery, is pleased to welcome alumna Erica Reese '11 as its Summer Artist-in-Residence from June 1 through July 27, 2013.

Reese will work on site at Blue Connection from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily creating original artwork and interacting with gallery patrons. Reese added, "As a painter, I am interested in the process of imitation, and how some people embrace this idea, while others will do anything in their power to disconnect from similarities and characteristics in which they cannot control."

Reese's paintings invite the viewer to consider the idea of imitation. She uses her experiences as a twin to drive her process. "My painting process is often visceral and intuitive," states Reese. "Imitation as traces of memories and feelings accumulate in my work and are layered on the canvas. Construction and deconstruction become a part of my painting process."

Erica is currently completing her MFA in painting & drawing at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Her work has been on display in galleries across the state of Illinois including Decatur, Springfield, Jacksonville, Carbondale, and Peoria as well as St. Louis, Mo. For additional information on Erica's work, visit www.ericareese.com.

Opened in 2003, Blue Connection is Millikin University's student-run, retail art gallery. The gallery features artwork by Millikin students, faculty, and alumni artists. The business also serves as a laboratory experience for Millikin University's Arts & Entrepreneurship program. The program utilizes curricular-based activities and student-run ventures to give students a live laboratory experience in developing, launching, and growing a business.

Erica Reese will work on site from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturdays at Blue Connection, located at 117 N. Water St. in Decatur. In addition, Reese's work will be featured during Blue Connection's After 5 Live events on Friday, July 5 from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. and Friday, August 9 from 5 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Millikin business students win DECA ICDC Entrepreneurship Challenge

Body:

Millikin University business students were recognized for their outstanding efforts at the 52nd annual Collegiate DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) held April 17-20 in Anaheim, Calif. The team of Peter Bushnell, a senior entrepreneurship major from Elmhurst, Ill., Jamie Rockhold, a junior accounting major from Clinton, Ill., and James Vavak, a junior marketing major from Fenton, Mo., won the 2013 ICDC Entrepreneurship Challenge. The team of James Vavak and Malcolm Branch, a junior management major from Chicago, Ill., placed in the top ten of the ICDC Sports and Entertainment Marketing Competition.

"Our students were competing against the best from other states," remarked Dr. Carrie Trimble, Millikin assistant professor of marketing. "The students were very confident during their interaction with the judges, and they were amazingly excited and exceptionally happy when they were announced the winner of the entrepreneurship challenge."

During the entrepreneurship challenge, students worked in teams to create a unique business concept based on a theme provided during the conference. Each team made a brief presentation to one or more judges who determined which team made the best business pitch. This year's theme focused on rising health care costs for business employees.

Millikin's team created a concept focusing on a food truck that sells fresh and healthy foods to businesses. The concept included sharing healthy lifestyle choices and nutritional information with business employees. The award for winning the challenge was a $5000 scholarship and a $350 prize for the individual chapter. The award was sponsored by Hilton Worldwide and the International Franchise Association Educational Foundation.

"We had a great team and we felt that we had all aspects of the business covered going into the event," remarked Rockhold. "It was amazing to be a part of the event because there were so many students from a variety of schools and different countries. You have the opportunity to talk with the best of the best and hear about their business programs – it was an eye-opening experience."

Trimble added, "For this particular event you have to think on your feet and work together, and the feedback they received described how well they worked together as a team. It's all about articulating your concepts and focusing on the idea, and I think they did an amazing job. The students are accustomed to making presentations and talking to adults about what they are doing, and that makes a big difference."

James Vavak and Malcolm Branch's first project during the Sports and Entertainment Marketing Competition focused on creating a marketing strategy for a movie theater based in a small market. The team developed a competitive analysis of surrounding movie theaters and created a marketing campaign for their theater. After reaching the finals of the competition, Vavak and Branch's final project was centered on managing a sports commission in a growing city. For this particular project the team had to create a five-year strategic plan describing the growth of a sports committee within the city and building the community.

The International Career Development Conference offers DECA members the chance to engage in challenging learning activities, receive awards and recognition for competitive and chapter achievements, and expand peer and business networks.

DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. DECA is organized into two unique student divisions each with programs designed to address the learning styles, interest and focus of its members. The Collegiate Division includes over 15,000 members in 200 colleges and universities. For more information on DECA, visit www.deca.org.

Millikin University's Blue Connection to host "Paws for a Cause"

Body:
Millikin University's Blue Connection will host "Paws for a Cause" presented by Carriage House Press and the Decatur & Macon County Animal Shelter Foundation (DMCASF) on Friday, May 3 from 5 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. in Downtown Decatur. The event will include live print demonstrations using both traditional hand burnishing techniques and an unconventional approach with a steamroller.

Millikin University Art Professor Lyle Salmi and student artists from Carriage House Press created woodcut prints from photos taken of adoptable pets at DMCASF. Select framed prints will be available during a silent auction inside Blue Connection from 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. with all proceeds supporting DMCASF.

When asked why he wanted to organize this event, Salmi said, "I wanted to move Carriage House Press events out into the public arena so students could experience the impact and potential connections made within the community by pairing their respective artistic skills with organizations for public events. I own three rescue dogs from the shelter, and I am committed to events for a good cause, so DMCASF was the best organization to start with."

Carriage House Press artists will also take over North Water Street to create giant woodcut prints using a steamroller provided by B&W Asphalt Paving in Decatur. "My idea was to take print making out of the studio and to the streets, literally," remarked Salmi. "Artists often create plates that are too large to fit through a traditional press, so they've found creative ways to make the prints. In the '60s people would run them over with a car, but the steamroller has become somewhat of a subculture of the traditional print making process."

Carriage House Press hosted their first steamroller printing event in September 2012. "We received overwhelmingly positive feedback from folks who attended the event," remarked Salmi. "If one wants to do printmaking out in the street, one must have a platform from which to capture people's attention - nothing does that quite like a steamroller."

"Paws for a Cause" will be held in conjunction with the Spring Art Fair. Additional activities throughout the evening include:

Perceptions Public Art Display

Nearly 20 graduating seniors from Millikin University's Bachelor of Arts program in the College of Fine Arts will present their art displays that analyze various perceptions of Decatur. In addition to visual installations, performances will be held throughout the evening on North Water Street.

"Students spent the semester shaping their projects through Decatur tours, collection of collateral and scrap materials, and conversations with community members," stated Millikin Lecturer of Arts & Entrepreneurship William "B.J." Warren. "They are discovering a different side of Decatur and coming up with some creative ways to share their findings."

Presentations during the event will range from original Decatur song compositions to multimedia dance presentations to a fashion show of found objects.

Decatur Public School District 61 Middle & High School Art Show

Decatur Public School District 61 will feature work from its middle school and high school students in a joint spring show on the third floor of the Madden Arts Center. Student work will be featured from across the District demonstrating the range of media students are exposed to in the classroom. The show will run April 28 - May 3 with a closing reception on Friday, May 3.

Barn Colony Artists, Inc. Annual Spring Show

Organized in 1939, Barn Colony Artists, Inc. is an organization of beginner, amateur, and professional artists from the Decatur area as well as friends of the fine arts. Held each May, the annual Spring Show at the Madden Art Gallery is judged to demonstrate the progress in skill and enthusiasm of the artists over the previous year. The member's only show has been held annually since 1940.

"Paws for a Cause" and the Spring Art Fair will be held Friday, May 3 from 5 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at the Madden Arts Center, located at 125 N. Water St. in Decatur. Complimentary refreshments will be provided by Lock, Stock, and Barrel with food available for purchase from Moon the Dog Food Truck. The event is free and open to the public.
