Music from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th century periods is studied each semester.  Scales, technical studies and exercises are required at all levels of study.  Class (lesson) meets once a week (arranged time) for either one half hour or hour lesson and receives one or two hours credit respectively. Admittance to applied study is by audition.
Jazz Guitar:  Applied study of jazz guitar and commercial styles. Music from the Swing Era to contemporary jazz is studied each semester. Grading Policy:

Applied Lessons:  Each weekly lesson will be graded.  Weekly grades will be determined from progress and quality of preparation of the assigned music, including: scales, arpeggios, exercises, etudes, repertoire and sight-reading.  Attendance and participation in Master Class and Area Recital is also a part of the applied grade and will be factored as 20% of total grade.  A Guitar Chamber Music Recital is given each semester and will be considered one of the area recitals. A computer file for each student grade will be updated weekly. If a lesson or class must be missed, the instructor must be notified 24 hrs. in advance. Unexcused absences will result in a failing grade for that week’s lesson.  All students enrolled in applied study are required to perform for juries (performance exam) at the end of each semester.  The jury is a faculty committee that listens to your performance and submits a grade and written comments. Your total grade is a composite of the following:  Applied lesson 50%; Jury 30%; Master Class and Area Recital 20%.

Student Guitar Recitals:  All guitar recitals are to be planned with the instructor.  Early in the semester the student should submit requests for a recital date.  The student is also responsible for asking two additional faculty to be on his hearing and recital committees.  After approval from the instructor, the student should arrange for a hearing date and clear it with his committee.  The hearing must be a minimum of three weeks before the recital.  The grade for the recital is a composite of the three faculty grades plus the instructor’s semester evaluation.

Guitar Master class:  A performance workshop, which meets the first three Tuesdays of the month to perform, listen, view videotapes and/or discuss guitar related matters.  Master Class is considered an extension of the applied lesson and is an integral part of the guitar studies program.  There is no separate credit for Master Class; however, attendance, participation and completion of assigned materials is figured into the applied study grade.  There will be no exemptions from Master Class due to class conflict or major. See grading policy.
