The Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra is both a musical organization of Millikin University School of Music and a community-supported professional orchestra comprising faculty, area free-lance musicians, and students. This partnership allows students of orchestral instruments to study, rehearse, and perform symphonic repertoire from all style periods alongside their studio teachers under professional conditions. The MDSO performs music of aesthetic significance to uncompromising standards of artistic integrity for diverse audiences in the region. The season includes mainstream classics, nationally recognized guest artists, new music, family concerts, oratorio, music theatre, opera, musicals, and pops, performed in concert halls, parks, churches, and schools across the community. The MDSO strives for lucid, accurate, flexible, emotionally committed performances of meaningful repertoire in a broad range of musical styles. The Millikin-Decatur Symphony is a member of the American Symphony Orchestra League in the Urban budget class. The Millikin University String Arts Ensemble comprises students only and meets between MDSO concert cycles.
