The John and Ula Leighty Science Scholarship Program
The John and Ula Leighty Science Scholarship Program was established in 1992 in honor
of Dr. John and his wife, Mrs. Ula Leighty. A member of the class of 1931, Dr. Leighty
graduated from Millikin with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and received his Master's
degree and Ph.D. from Purdue University. He married the former Ula Davis, a biology major
from the Millikin Class of 1933: she passed away in 1989. Dr. Leighty's distinguished
33-year career at Eli Lilly and Company in Indianapolis encompasses many milestones.
He was a member of the team that first produced penicillin for Lilly in the 1940s
and was involved in developing, producing, and supervising the production of other
pharmaceuticals including Erthromycin, vancomycin, streptomycin, and Darvon. His career
was capped by his tenure as Executive Director of Scientific Research, where he was
responsible for 650 Lilly scientists in seven research divisions.
The John and Ula Leighty Science Scholarship Program offers an excellent
opportunity to incoming students who wish to major in a science field at Millikin
University and who would benefit from undergraduate research opportunities. Student finalists
are reviewed by a faculty committee who recommend six students each year to
receive a total of $2,000 annually in scholarship funds. In addition, students receive a $3,000 summer stipend for research conducted on campus between the sophomore and junior years.
The criteria for admission to the program are students who:
- have taken a strong college-preparatory program including appropriate courses in science a mathematics and who intend to major in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Pre-Engineering,
- rank in or near the upper 10% of their high school class,
- have an ACT score of 27 or higher
- have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, and who
- can demonstrate potential for creativity in science.
On October 18th, 1998, Dr. Leighty was honored at the
Science Alumni Symposium
and Open House and ceremonial ground breaking for the new science building.
