Summer 2009 Nurse Intern Program

& Richland Community College
This course is designed to help student nurses to begin to “think like a nurse”. Methods used to achieve this include working one-on-one with a preceptor on varied nursing units and shifts at either Decatur Memorial Hospital or St. Mary’s Hospital In Decatur, IL. The class will discuss topics including but not limited to ethics, “ways of knowing”, communication, end of life issues, and decision-making processes. The students will also be able to explore specialty units that they may not have been exposed to during their other clinical courses. Students will be able to develop mentor relationships with experienced nurses, gain experience in critical thinking, assessment and organization and begin to develop a professional network. This courseincludes 6-8 hours of class time and 32-40 hours of paid clinical per week.
Eligibility:
- Successful completion of at least 2 semesters of an ADN nursing program or Junior year of a BSN nursing program by May 2009 and be in good standing
- Overall GPA of 2.75 (4.0 scale)
Requirements:
- Completion of internship application, personal essay and 2 references by application deadline
- CPR certification through August 1, 2009
- Submission of transcript from current nursing program
- Submit a copy of lab/clinical skills completed in school
