Nature, Navajo, and Nukes
- This course may be taken for US Studies, Culture Track, or Elective credit.
- There are many who would argue the most grievous disaster in America's history is still going on, right in the heart of American's Southwest, where thirty-five years of mining is still being felt. This course will explore America's involvement in the uranium industry and the devastating impact it had on the people and communities at its center. Despite modern day declines in the industry, uranium's legacy remains all too apparent on the landscape and in the people of the Navajo Reservation, where they continue to be plagued with environmental hazards and cultural hardships.
- The case of uranium exploration and later development on the Colorado Plateau provides the extended case study for this course on environmental racism/justice.
Ancient Puebloans of the American Southwest:
- This course may be taken for US Studies, Culture Track, or Elective credit.
- Much of US history is written from a fairly traditional, European-based perspective, which means that the course of events as they were seen by non-Europeans who lived in this part is generally overlooked. This course will focus on two important native cultures that lived and still live in the Four Corners area of the American Southwest.
- The majority of attention will be upon the Ancient Ones who lived in the area 1,000 years ago. To the extent possible, we will learn also about the Pueblo tribes who are their descendants.
- As their lands and ruins are explored, the class will also investigate their histories, art, culture, philosophies, and way of life.
