Panhellenic Recruitment Guidelines for Potential Members

Millikin University

(As of December 2003)

1.      A woman is considered eligible to participate in membership recruitment if she is a full-time (carrying at least 12 credit hours) student and in good academic standing with the university (2.0 gpa*).  She must have successfully completed at least one full semester of college. * Even though the recruitment eligibility gpa is a 2.0, all chapters have individual eligibility standards that are above a 2.0. It is possible that a woman participating in recruitment may not be eligible to pledge a chapter.

2.  A woman shall not be, or ever have been, an initiated member of an NPC group.  (If in doubt, consult Panhellenic.)

3.  A woman is ineligible for membership recruitment if she has been a new member of an NPC fraternity on this campus within the same calendar year.  This includes having accepted a formal bid from another sorority or signed a preference card during formal recruitment.

4.  A woman shall register for formal membership recruitment and pay a $5.00 registration fee.

5.  A woman shall attend orientation and all parties to which she has accepted invitations.  In the event of an illness, class conflict or other emergency, she shall notify the Panhellenic Vice President, Membership Recruitment and/or her Rho Gamma, if she cannot attend.

6.  All women will be provided transportation to and from all membership recruitment events.  Potential members must travel in designated transportation to and from events.

7.  A woman shall consult her Rho Gamma before withdrawing from membership recruitment.  In the event the woman feels that she must withdraw from membership recruitment, she shall go to the Panhellenic Office and sign an official withdrawal form.

8.  Panhellenic nametags will be provided for all potential members.

9.  From the beginning of University Orientation, through the end of formal membership recruitment, no potential member may visit a women’s fraternity chapter except to attend registered invitational events.

10.No women’s fraternity member may buy anything for a potential member (i.e. meal, soft drink, alcohol, etc.) and no potential member may buy anything for a women’s fraternity member during the formal membership recruitment period. During informal recruitment periods, no fraternity member may buy anything for a potential member (i.e. meal, soft drink, alcohol, etc.) with the intent of recruiting her.  No potential member may buy anything for a fraternity member with the intent of being recruited.

11.A woman shall not give a promise, verbal or written, to join a certain fraternity before formal bids are issued through the Panhellenic Council.

12.A woman shall fill out the Membership Recruitment Acceptance (preference card) immediately after the last preference event she attends.  Once a Membership Recruitment Acceptance has been signed, no change may be made.  Until a preference card is signed by the potential member, she shall not be considered pledged to any fraternity.

13.Any woman signing a Membership Recruitment Acceptance and receiving a bid at the end of membership recruitment shall be bound by the agreement for one calendar year, if she is at the same college or university.

14. Strict silence is the period in which there will be no conversation or contact between women’s fraternity members and prospective members.  This includes all references to fraternities, verbal, written, typed or printed.  Strict silence is the period from the end of the woman’s last event until she reports to the fraternity from which she accepts a bid.

15.A list of all membership financial responsibilities will be given to each potential member by each fraternity at the information event.

16.Potential Members have the right and responsibility to feel comfortable and un-pressured regarding the recruitment process. If at any time a potential member feels pressured to join a specific chapter, or if they feel uncomfortable in any way, the potential member is encouraged to contact a Panhellenic official.
