Planning for Next Year
International Study
options at Millikin
Millikin University offers students the opportunity
to spend anywhere from a week or two, to a summer,
semester or year studying abroad. Students are
given the chance to share in the life of another
culture, to live with a local family or classmates,
and to learn the customs of another country. Speaking
a foreign language is not a pre-requisite for
all study abroad programs, and class credit is
transferable towards Millikin graduation in most
cases. Approved International Study opportunities
include direct admission to selected foreign universities,
Millikin-affiliated international study programs,
exchange programs, and a variety of interesting
programs developed by Millikin faculty. Study
abroad options at Millikin cover a wide range
of locations, cultures and interests. For more
information regarding the international study
program please go to our website at www.millikin.edu/international/
Summer School
Registration packets are available as early as
April or May, and students can register up until
the class begins. Typically, Millikin offers immersion,
short, and full-term summer sessions, beginning
as early as the end of May and finishing no later
than early August. Term length varies greatly
depending on professors, course offerings and
interest in courses. Although financial aid availability
is limited during summer session (loans may be
options if your student currently utilizes them),
the summer term is an excellent way for students
to catch up or get ahead on academic credit.
Registration for Fall
Semester
Registration packets are available online in late
March. Advising Day is April 6. Your student will
meet with his/her academic advisor and devise
a schedule for next fall. It may be a good idea
to ask your student what classes he/she is signed
up for and if he/she has fulfilled the academic
credit requirements necessary to make academic
progress.
REMINDER: Applications
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) are sent to most
students’ home addresses for completion
for the 2004-2005 academic year. This form must
be submitted for processing before April 15, 2004.
Continued Opportunities
for Involvement
Once your student has completed the first year
at Millikin University, he/she might want to think
about becoming more involved on campus. New options
that will become available once your student completes
the first year include serving as an Orientation
Leader, a Resident Assistant or a Teaching Assistant.
Encourage your student to become involved as it
enhances what he/she is learning in the classroom.
Housing Assignments
for Fall Semester
A housing informational meeting will take place
sometime in February. In March, a selection process,
known as “room draw,” will take place.
Encourage your student to think about potential
roommates and where they want to live next fall.
Students may choose from University Housing (i.e.
Blackburn, Mills, Oakland, etc…) or University-affiliated
properties (i.e. The Woods and Greek houses).
On-Campus Jobs
If your student did not find an on-campus job last fall at the Job
Fair or did not choose to work during the first year, it is possible
that there are still options available. Encourage your student to
check out the job listings posted in the Financial Aid office as
they may be able to establish summer and/or fall employment as early
as mid-spring.
