Perhaps your college student is returning home for the summer to the same job that he or she had since high school or over previous semester/summer breaks. Or maybe he or she will need to find a job. Either way there are several points to consider in order to ensure a great summer experience.
If your student plans on returning home to a previously held job, he or she should first evaluate if this is in their best interest to do so. It may be time to find an internship or other opportunity that will be a career building experience. This would include any type of employment or volunteer position that allows him or her to clarify or confirm career goals and would help to increase marketability as a job candidate upon graduation.
The process of looking for a summer job or internship should begin early in the spring. Most employers who routinely hire college students for summer employment or internships often have deadlines for application in March or April. Some have even earlier deadlines, but it’s never too early to plan for next year.
Your student will need a well-developed resume to submit in application for most internship opportunities. The Career & Experiential Education Center helps students to develop resumes and to find the real world experience employers seek in new college graduates. Have them stop by today for a one on one meeting to discuss his or her specific summer experience needs.
- Early Registration for the Fall 2008 term is April 2 to May 7. Remember, that your student’s account must be in good standing in order to register.
- Student Financial Aid awards for the 2008-09 academic year will be available by May 1st for those students who have filed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If you have not yet filed, please be sure to do so as soon as possible! Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov and complete the 2008-09 academic year application.
- Graduation is May 18. If your student is graduating, remember that they must submit the $35 graduation fee, and their account must be paid in full prior to the ceremony in order to participate and receive their diploma.
Note to graduating loan borrowers: All students who borrow a Federal loan during their academic career are required to complete an Exit Loan Counseling Session. Very soon your student will be receiving a campus e-mail reminder about this requirement. If your student wants to get a jump on completing this requirement, he/she can visit, http://www.mapping-your-future.org and select the “online student loan counseling” icon. Federal Perkins Loan borrowers may receive additional information from ECSI, Millikin’s Perkins Loan Servicer. - May/Summer Immersion term begins on May 19. If your student plans to take an immersion course, please make sure they stop in the SSC to confirm payment deadlines.
- Fall 2008 Billing Statements will be mailed during the first week in July to your student’s home address. The due date will be July 25th. To ensure your student’s financial aid credits are accurate on this first billing statement for the term, please complete all of your student’s financial aid documents by June 30th.
Ensuring your student has accepted and completed all financial aid/loan documents will reduce your balance due for the term. If there will be money owed on the account after all financial aid distributions, a payment plan can be automatically established. July’s billing statement will indicate the first monthly payment amount due for the term that must be paid by the due date, July 25th.
Please note: All subsequent billing statements for the Fall 2008 term, will be emailed to the student and their authorized user(s). If you are not currently receiving these electronic billing statements, please have your student grant you access as an authorized user through the MU Account Suite.
If there is anything that you need assistance with to ensure that your student’s information is complete for next Fall, please contact us. Our knowledgeable SSC representatives would be happy to help! The SSC staff can be reached at 1-800-373-7733, (option 1) or 217-424-6317, or by email at studentservicecenter@millikin.edu.
In addition, the 15th annual Millikin University Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium will offer presentations throughout the day, and the Humanities Undergraduate Research Forum (HURF) will return with presentations of especially outstanding work in the afternoon. We hope you will be able to attend, see what your scholar has been up to, and experience and enjoy the impressive results of a Millikin University education.
Would your student like to participate in a once-in-a-lifetime adventure?
