How to Keep Your Student Engaged in World News

Does your student know what’s happening in the world?

Though the internet is becoming a popular place to inform and reach this tech-savvy generation, many students still complain that they never have enough time to read the newspaper or keep up with world events.

That’s where you come in. Help your student stay or become engaged in national and world news:

• Tune in to NPR. This can be done via podcasts, which students can listen to at any time of day or night. Select several podcasts together, download them and listen. Be sure to share thoughts and reactions together.
• Send your student an email with selected news clips each week. Complete a quick search on the Internet for the top news stories of the week. Follow up with your student to discuss them.
• Watch a weekly TV news show together – from afar. Select a show that fits your preferences, and make plans to watch it from your respective locations. After the program, talk with each other via phone to share points of view.
• Host a conversation dinner. Invite your student (and some friends if you are really brave) home for a special cooked meal. Have the dinner revolve around topical conversations (i.e. presidential election, world events, etc.) designed to stimulate your student’s thinking about the world in which we live.

Not only will you challenge and stimulate your student’s national and world news awareness, but gain much valued quality time with your son or daughter.
