Student Housing Options: What Parents Need to Know
With the spring semester beginning and the snow continuing to fall, campus housing for next year is probably the last thing on your student’s mind. However, now is a great time to sit down with or call your student to discuss his/her housing plans for the 2008-2009 academic year.
Currently, leases can be signed for apartment living at The Woods (beginning on February 4 for first-year students) and traditional residence hall rooms can be contracted beginning on February 18.
There is a wealth of research that indicates students who live in University housing persist at a higher rate that those who live off-campus. Your student will reap the benefits of living in close proximity to campus resources, including staff and facilities, when they live with us. Below you will find information regarding the housing options available to your student.
OUR POLICY Millikin University has a three-year residentiality requirement for full-time, undergraduate students. Students may live in University-operated residence halls and apartments, Greek chapter houses, and The Woods at Millikin. Student wishing to live off-campus must meet one of the following criteria: 1. Be 22 years of age or older during the academic year 2. Be married (marriage license is required) 3. Have dependents 4. Be of senior standing (88 credits or more) at the beginning of the term 5. Live within a 40-mile radius of campus and live with a close relative (notarized documentation is required) 6. Demonstrate significant financial hardship (defined as having exhausted all loan eligibility- verified through the Student Services Center) 7. Have a significant medical condition that warrants routine medical care that cannot be administered in University housing (ie. live-in care, medical documentation required)
LIVING OFF-CAMPUS Students who meet one of the above criteria may submit an off-campus petition. Off-campus petitions are due no later than May 1 of any given year. Petitions received after this date may be denied. Petitions must be fully completed, including a valid address of residence, in order to be considered.
A charge will be assessed to those who chose to live off campus in violation of the above policy. The off-campus living charge is equal to the average room rate in a given academic year. For the 2007-2008 academic year, the average room rate is $4,300.
