Career Options for Majors

Majoring in political science can qualify you for many careers in private industry and nonprofit organizations, as well as public sector organizations-including careers in business, law, consulting, state, local, and federal government, journalism and communications, international organization, finance, political campaigns, interest groups, community servicce and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and pre-college and college teaching.

Political science training also provides valuable preparation for participating in community organizations, electoral politics, movements on behalf of specific policies, and especially for seeking elective or appointive positions in government. While many of these are voluntary activities, participation in them develops skills and creates opportunities for your career success.

Our majors are successful in many fields; we keep in close touch with our alumni and help our students use these contacts to find successful internships and first jobs.

Adapted from "Political Science: An Ideal Liberal Arts Major" published by the American Political Science Association, 2002.

"It's okay if you don't know exactly what type of career you want to pursue – just go with the political science program – enjoy it – and in the end it will all pay off."
