Political Science Resources at Staley Library
Technological innovation has dramatically changed the way that we use libraries. A generation ago, students conducted research primarily by consulting books, journals, newspapers, and printed reports. They were mostly limited to the material on the shelves.
The explosive growth of the internet has radically altered the information available. The online world presents extraordinary amounts of information; instead of making the most of limited reources, students now must efficiently extract relevant and accurate material from a dizzying array of sources.
This page discusses some of the library resources most commonly utilized by political science students. However, it represents only a starting point. For assistance with specific research projects, consult with a librarian at the research assistance desk (at the back of the first floor, across from the circulation desk).
Online Databases
Note: Most of these databases can only be used
from on-campus computers.
| Lexis-Nexis |
Complete text from the mid-1990s for an extraordinary number
of newspapers. Most articles are placed in the databse within
days of publication. Lexis-Nexis searches are generally far more
comprehensive and cover a far greater time period than anything
available on the newspapers' own web pages.
The main search page allows you to simultaneously search several
dozen major newspapers such as the New York Times, the
Washington Post, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and
the Chicago Sun-Times. This default search also includes
several major British newspapers and some international English-language
newspapers such the South China Morning Post.
By going to the "Guided News Search," you can alter
the settings to search hundreds of other publications. Examples
of archived publications of interest to political science students
include Campaigns and Elections, Common Cause Magazine,
the Economist, the Illinois Legal Times, Global
Environmental Politics, the International Lawyer, The
New Republic, and Time.
For students taking pre-law classes, Lexis-Nexis'
legal research page offers the complete text of all
federal court decisions (all levels), all state supreme court
and state appellate court decisions, and articles from dozens
of law journals and legal publications.
You can also use Lexis-Nexis to search
statistical data from a wide variety of sources (mostly
governmental).
|
| NewsBank |
Complete text from the mid-1990s for selected newspapers. Millikin
only subscribes to a portion of this service, enabling us to access
the Chicago Tribune and several other Illinois newspapers.
Like Lexis-Nexis, this comprehensive coverage enable students to
conduct more in-depth searches and access far more articles than
the Tribune's own web page.
