A Producer and Performer
Chris Jones has plenty of experience as a performer. The sophomore Commercial Music major has played in several bands and recorded many CDs, including one recently with his band Afternoon Drive in Millikin’s own recording studio. However, it was through two different professional experiences that Chris saw the behind-the-scenes work of the music industry. “I did a job shadow at a small recording studio, in Bloomington, Ill., and I worked as a guitar tech for a Jazz guitarist out of Chicago during the summer of 2005,” he said. This, paired with Millikin’s state-of-the-art recording technology, has made Millikin the right choice for Chris. “I have complete access to the recording studio, which is the focus of my major,” he said. “That’s something I wouldn’t have been able to do at another school.” Being involved in Jazz Band has proven to be a rewarding experience as well. “(Jazz Band Conductor) Perry Rask has had the greatest influence on me,” Chris said. “He takes it a step farther then just the music. He shares his passion for jazz with his students and really supports all aspects of our music education here at Millikin.” Jazz Band has also helped Chris determine what he wants to do in the future. “I hope to be working in the city of Chicago, dealing with the jazz recording business,” he said. “I would love to be able to engineer and produce jazz down the road.”
