An Opportunity for Growth
When choosing a university, Elementary Education major Shanel Newell looked for a school with an education program that would give her the most teaching opportunities. She found those opportunities at Millikin. “Student teaching at Dennis Elementary School and Garfield Montessori here in Decatur has helped me learn the most about my major,” she said. Small classes and close, personal relationships with professors have also greatly influenced Shanel’s Millikin experience. “I’ve learned a lot from Professor Ngozi Onuora. She is so inspirational and she always gives me real-life examples in her classes that will help me when I graduate from Millikin,” she says. For now, when she’s not teaching, Shanel enjoys spending her free time with her fiancé and friends. But Shanel is sure her Millikin education has provided her with the tools and experiences needed to succeed in the education field. “Five years from now I hope to have my Masters in Educational Administration and Educational Counseling and be working for a school district or on a school board,” she says.
