Standard Sanctions for Residence Hall Disciplinary Violations

It is our goal to create responsible citizens within the residence life community. Therefore, it is necessary to hold students accountable for behavior that is inconsistent with good citizenship. The outline below indicates standard sanctions for common policy violations.

Level I- Resident Assistant

Level II- Area Coordinator

Level III- Area Coordinator and/or Director, Residence Life

Level IV- Dean of Student Development

Judicial Level	Violation	Standard Sanction
Level I	Propping door(s) open	Automatic $25 fine and discipline session with RA
Level I	Violations of Residence Hall Visitation Policy	Automatic $50 fine and discipline session with RA.
Level I	Violations of Noise/Quiet Hours Policy	First offense: warning by RA, repeat offenses: sanctions as determined by RA/AC.
Level I	Tampering with Fire Safety Devices (extinguisher, smoke detector)	Automatic $50 fine and discipline session with RA.
Level I	Smoking in Residence Hall	Automatic $50 fine and discipline session with RA.
Level II	Improper Residence Move (moving residence without proper approval)	Automatic $100 fine and discipline session with AC. Immediate move to original residence.
Level II	Improper Check-Out (not completing contract cancellation, not completing RCR)	Automatic $100 fine and room damages as determined by residence hall staff.
Level II	Violations of Residence Hall Pet Policy	Automatic $100 fine, confiscation of pet (with 24 grace period to pick up animal- after 24 hours, humane society), and discipline session with AC.
Level II	Damages to Residence Hall facilities/equipment	Automatic fine per damage incurred (see damage range sheet), discipline session with AC, and/or other sanctions depending on the severity of the violation
Level II	Pulling Fire Alarm	Automatic $500 fine and discipline session with AC.
Level II	Possession of a weapon	Automatic $100 fine, permanent confiscation of weapon, and discipline session with AC,
Level II/III	Violations of Millikin University Alcohol Policy	Automatic $50 fine, discipline session with AC, and/or further sanctions depending on severity of violation
Level II/III	Theft	Police report to be filed, discipline session with AC, and further sanctions to be determined by AC (may include reassignment or suspension of housing).
Level II-IV	Use of weapon	Automatic $100 fine, permanent confiscation of weapon, discipline session with AC, and additional sanctions as determined by AC.
Level II-IV	Person to Person Violence	Discipline session with AC (or upper level judicial officer depending on severity of violation), ban from hall in which violence occurred (if not own residence) or curfew for an assigned period of time (if own residence), and/or required anger management program and meeting with Director of Safety & Security to determine police department involvement. Student may also be reassigned to or suspended from residence without consultation.

All fines are per violation incurred
Judicial officers reserve the right to deviate from the above sanction list as well as to assign additional sanctions if deemed necessary.
Failure to complete sanctions or to comply with reasonable requests of a University official may result in additional sanctions.
All funds raised from disciplinary fines will benefit professional development for Residence Hall staff as well as in-hall programming.
If a student cannot pay the assigned fine, they may be employed on-campus (at the discretion of the judicial officer) in order to work off their assigned fine. One hour of work will constitute $5 towards the assigned fine.
This list is not meant to be an all-inclusive list of violations. Judicial officers reserve the right to interpret violation of Millikin University Policies.
Violations of State, local, or federal law are also considered violation of Millikin University policies.
When a felony is committed, the Decatur Police Department will be involved in addition to any University sanctions deemed necessary.
