On October 5, 2007, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that he had awarded $3.9 Million in LSTA Grants to 241 Illinois libraries, library systems, and museums containing libraries. Among the awardees was Millikin University's Staley Library, which received an FY2008 LSTA Digital Imaging Grant* award of $20,142 for its "Digital-Decaturian Project." As stated in the project's abstract:

the purpose of this project is to intiate digital imaging of The Decaturian, Millikin University's student newspaper, making it available and full-text searchable to patrons worldwide ranging from students, faculty, and alumni, to researchers interested in Central Illinois history, college life and culture, and the relationship between a community and a college as it progressed through an entire century. This project will provide our current and future patrons with greater access to, and greater functionality with, the more than 16,000 printed pages that span over 100 years of history.

* - Funding for this grant was awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a Division of the Office of Secretary of State, using funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), under the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA).

Progress Report

10/2/08: The Digital Decaturian (1903-1951) collection has been published and is available to search online! We will be working with CARLI support to add some further search features to the collection in order to make it more easily searchable by date. If you have any feedback, or would like assistance/tips on how best to search the collection, please let us know!

7/7/08: We have received our second portable hard-drive of images and metadata. In the next few weeks we will be loading our collection and experimenting with the set up of the Digital Decaturian so that it is ready for patron use by late summer.

6/4/08: We have received our first portable hard-drive of images and metadata.

3/14/08: Original hardcopies of the The Decaturians from 1903-1951 have been sent to Pennsylvania and have been imaged by our project partner, OCLC Digital Collection and Preservation Services. We have already received back our archival and service copies of the microfilms for those 1903-1951 issues. They are currently in the process of creating digital images of each page and then processing those images to make them full-text searchable and will eventually be shipping portable hard-drives with the images and its supporting metadata for us to load onto the CARLI Digital Collections server.
