The football team from 1916, deemed the "Original Big Blue", won the state championship in 1916. Fred Long, front row, center, became the first African-American to graduate from Millikin University. Today, the Long-Vanderburg (Marian Vanderburg was the first African-American female to graduate) scholarship worth $10,000, is awarded to outstanding minority students.
