Student Staff Job Descriptions

The library hires students to work in several different areas. In hiring, preference is given to students with work study awards. Summaries follow, with links to fuller descriptions. 

Circulation Student Assistant

Circulation students assist patrons, answer the phone, answer directional questions, circulate materials, shelve and straighten all library materials, assist with processing the reserve collection, register borrowers, maintain library equipment, do some computer searching, light typing, filing and assist with special projects. 8 - 10 hours a week (varies due to number of student assistants and schedules). 

Interlibrary Loan Student Assistant 1 and Interlibrary Loan Student Assistant 2

ILL students retrieve books and periodicals to be loaned out. They also photocopy articles, type periodical requests, search for items on the computer, and label items to be sent out. 10 hours a week, in 2 hours each day.

Periodicals Student Assistant

Periodicals Assistants records and prepares all new periodicals, microfilm, newspaper indexes and outstanding order titles, retrieve periodicals from Gorin Hall, assist with annual shift of periodicals and inventory of periodicals, and assists with special projects. 10 hours a week. 

Technical Services Student Assistant

Technical Services students searches for books using the computer, light typing, labeling, checks shelves, processes new library acquisitions, takes the mail to the mailroom in Shilling Hall, files, and assists with special projects. 10 hours a week.

Summer Student Assistants

Summer student assistants do a little of everything, as needed, often including including significant projects as well as staffing the Circulation Desk. 40 hours/week.
