netLibrary
In addition to the books available to Millikin University's library users through the I-Share Catalog, we also make available a select group of electronic titles (eBooks). netLibrary is the provider of these titles.
You can search the netLibrary collection freely; and helpful search tips are available.
To see the actual books ("check the books out"), you need to create your own (free) account in netLibrary. This account is unrelated to your Staley Library circulation records, and is instead managed by netLibrary.
- The reason for the account is that only one user at a time can use the owned books (see "Library Collection" below).
- You will need to remember your own account specifics, since no-one at Staley Library or the CARLI office will know your particulars.
- The account must be created on a Millikin campus computer, so that netLibrary will know that you are connected with Millikin. However, you can then use your account anywhere you happen to be.
- The account is free, unless you buy additional books (see "owned" below).
To that you have checked out, you do not need any special equipment or software beyond your usual browser.
To download a book on your own computer, you first need reader software that you download from netLibrary. (This software cannot be downloaded on Staley Library's networked computers.) The downloaded book will expire at the end of the loan period, although you can copy limited portions of the title to keep.
The electronic titles from netLibrary fall into three categories:
 |
The books in the "Library Collection" encompass approximately 1,500 titles that have been purchased by IDAL for use by Illinois libraries. The user checks each book out for a period of no more than two hours at a time, during which time no-one else can use the book.
- The owned collection is drawn from the following subject areas: General Reference, Computers & Information Technology, Business, and Consumer Health & Medicine.
- Lists of the titles are available at the Staley Library Circulation and Reference desks, or you can download the 47 page list as a Microsoft Word file.

eBooks in the "Public Collection" are public texts (not copyrighted) that are available to all netLibrary users without restrictions. More than one person at a time can check out these titles. |
 |
In addition, anyone can purchase (with a credit card) their own additional titles which only they can use. |
