Summer 2004 Staley Library changes

Debbie Myers and Brad Leach, Summer 2004 student staff, with the new flat panel computer monitors at the Circulation Desk.

Over the summer 2004, we again moved furniture and stacks around, as follows.

(Reference Desk on left, new study tables on right)
We removed a row of periodicals shelving on the library's main floor to make room for more study tables under a roof where they will contribute less to ambient building noise.
One of the removed shelving units we placed by the reference desk for frequently used reference titles.

We moved shelving that used to hold old newspapers (these we placed in storage) to make a more roomy enclosed space for the large round study table next to the first floor video stacks (already a popular study area).

This freed-up shelving we used to extend the reference collection shelving.

moving the low shelf unit to provide a storage unit/work space barrier in Archives
Then we incorporated  into the expanded reference shelving the encyclopedias that used to be housed in a low free-standing shelf unit behind the reference desk,
and relocating the previously obscured atlas case to the former encyclopedia location.

The new study area has tables, carrels, a blackboard (chalk available form the Circulation Desk on request) and laptop ports.
On the second floor of the library, we created a sheltered study area next to the writing center by moving the shelving for curriculum materials and children's books to a more spacious area on the other side of the second floor.

Some of the slanting shelves from the periodicals shelving row (top) we used for displaying some of our new books in a more tempting manner. Our display for new books is behind the first floor lounge area and also behind the stairs. Where we used to shelve the new books we now instead offer books for sale that have either been superceded in our collection or are gifts that were not appropriate to add to our collection.

We also moved all of Chem Abstracts to the library's fourth floor, freeing up first floor shelving so that we still have back issues of periodicals back to 1990 on the first floor.

We hope that you will find these changes useful.
