Two of the library's support staff members, Gavena
Dahlman and Marsha Leach, will be marching in the PACE graduation ceremonies
this May, having both just completed the coursework for their degrees; and Gavena has been accepted to the
UIUC Graduate School of Library
and Information Science (GSLIS).
We are an accomplished and ambitious lot! Which is also true of our
student staff.

LaToya Jones was
selected as the Millikin Student Employee of the Month of February.
It is wonderful for LaToya to get campus-wide recognition for what we
already know in the library, which is that LaToya is not only helpful and
kind when people come to the Circulation Desk needing assistance; she
goes that extra mile to make sure they leave the University with a
good impression of Millikin. Her positive attitude is contagious and
we can always count on her to get |
|
any job done correctly and with little
direction. We have been lucky enough to have had LaToya work
for the library all of her four years at Millikin. |
During the winter months just past, the
library's second floor exhibit space (outside the Writing Center) has
displayed wonderful paintings by two of our student workers, Angela Mircsov (first
row below) and Laura Podeschi. Angie's paintings were also on display at the Blue
Connection between Feb. 3 and 10 when she was their Spotlight Artist.

The library art exhibit was
arranged by Barb Bolser, one of whose responsibilities is collection
development for the School of Art. (Click on the thumbnails for larger
versions of these wonderful art works.)
Laura Podeschi also had a haiku
published in the 2005 Red Moon Anthology of English-language
haiku. Laura's haiku was one of 154 selected from over 1,800 submitted in a
rigorous process of editorial nomination and blind peer review. Her haiku
was originally written as part of Professor Randy Brook's Global Haiku Traditions course at
Millikin, and had come to national attention by being published in Acorn
magazine (Philadelphia).
Other student worker news: Emily
Sites and Lyndsay Brault performed in the opera
The
Coronation of Poppea by Claudio Monteverdi, presented by Millikin
University's Department of Theatre & Dance in conjunction with the School of
Music-Opera Theatre between Feb. 9 and 12. Emily sang the part of Ottavia
and Lyndsay the part of Damigella.

February titles are the latest to be listed!

Please respond to the
electronic
questionnaire!
The Millikin librarians first created a library web site ten
years ago - or, more accurately, Cindy Fuller created it. Along with
growing our site through the addition of many resources and services in the
intervening time, we have also totally revamped the site four times since then; and this
coming summer, we will be doing a fifth re-design. It will be a lot of work
for the librarians, but we are looking forward to the results.
As part of our re-design process, we are asking your
feedback on the current site. Joe Hardenbrook has compiled a
brief electronic
questionnaire on your use and opinion on our site. Please click on
the link and complete the survey! It should not take you more than 10
minutes of your time, and we would find the results a very helpful addition
to the other investigations we are currently conducting on what works on
library web sites.
By the way, if you are curious about our past pages, we
have
archived some examples of those older pages (we ARE librarians!).
Another source of saved web pages, not just ours, is the
Wayback Machine Internet Archive.
Quoting from their site, "The
Internet Archive is building a digital library of Internet sites and other
cultural artifacts in digital form [since 1996]. Like a paper library, we
provide free access to researchers, historians, scholars, and the general
public." It was, of course,
started by
librarians!

Print materials for Millikin's North Central
Association
Self-Study are being placed on reserve in the library, to create a
Resource Room for the many committees and other groups involved in the
self study process. In addition, Millikin has established a
web site for the self study with many other resources and
updates. (The moving car is the self study mascot from the web page.) |

Use of the
library's new Instant Messaging reference assistance has been slow to take
off; but those who have used it have been pleased by it. Again, if you would
like to try it, our
AOL IM screen name is MUlibrarian. Just add us to your
buddy list! For more details on this new service, please see:
http://www.millikin.edu/staley/IM.html
Many of you have already looked at the web page we
created to honor
Dr.
Charles Hale, Director of Staley Library between 1976 and 1999, at his
death on January 29, 2006. Dr. Hale's family designated the library
as one of two possible recipients of memorial gifts, and we are most
grateful to have received donations from over 50 different sources as a
result. We will be working with the family on the most appropriate use of
those donations, to create a lasting tribute that best reflects Dr. Hale's
special interests.
The newest online Archives exhibit showcases
Millikin's
Student Army Training Corps (S.A.T.C) unit that was active during the
first World War. The purpose of these units was to
keep drafted young men in college while also preparing them for the front
lines. The exhibit includes quotes from issues of the Decaturian of the time
and from soldiers' letters home from the front, and also pictures from their
time on the Millikin campus.
The exhibits are the work of Todd Rudat,
Archival Associate, working with Archivist Amanda Pippitt.
