Staley Library newsletter May 2007

This year, not only are four of our student workers celebrating graduation, but also two of our staff!

Emily

Lyndsay

Natalie

Vakisha

Three of the four (Emily, Lyndsay and Natalie) have worked in the library since their freshman year!

After graduation, Natalie  is going to the University of Illinois @ Springfield for a Master's of Science in Biology Degree with a specialty in Ecology & Environmental Science.  At the Millikin University Honors Convocation on April 19, 2007 Natalie was presented with the John and Ula Leighty Research Award for her research in biology.

Emily will be pursuing  a Masters of Music with a specialization in Vocal Performance at Northern Illinois University.  She is the recipient of the Alpha Lambda Delta Senior Certificate for having maintained a 3.5 grade point average for four years.

Lyndsay will be attending Illinois State University to earn a Master of Music Performance with a specialization in Vocal. She too is the recipient of the Alpha Lambda Delta Senior Certificate for having maintained a 3.5 grade point average for four years; and also of the Sigma Alpha Iota College Honor Award for "a senior member who possesses attributes of musicianship, scholarship and leadership."

Vakisha is intending to put her Millikin degree to immediate use in practicing her profession, and to that end is applying for nursing positions at Chicago hospitals.

We are very proud of all their accomplishments, we wish them successes both professional and personal, and we will miss them all very much!

As we have in the past, we have offered each of the graduates the opportunity to add titles entirely of their own choosing to the library's collection. Each of the titles will bear a book plate that says "Selected for Staley Library, Millikin University, by student worker [name], Class of 2007."

So far, Lyndsay has chosen to add a CD of Mozart's "Don Giovanni", and Natalie selected "Living Downstream" by Sandra Steingraber, and "Great Human Diasporas" by Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza.

New books & other materials: New titles for March and April 2007 have been added.

From time to time, Debbie Myers, working with the other librarians, chooses books from the library's collection to display on the stand-up computer table by the front windows. Subjects covered have included Black History Month, Women's History Month, and baseball. The current selection is called "What Debbie considers to be the most interesting books in the library (because my birthday is in May)."  Here is a list of those books.  All of the books are available for check-out.

Library services

Throughout the spring semester, the four librarians (Cindy Fuller, Joe Hardenbrook, Debbie Myers and Amanda Pippitt) conducted over 70 instruction sessions for classes. The majority of these sessions have been devoted to the Critical Writing, Reading and Research program, but the librarians also taught research skills to students in PACE, biology, education, English, exercise science, music, and nursing courses.

The librarians continually add to the tutorials and subject guides on the library’s web site. Many of the guides provide lists of and links to resources in support of conducting research in particular topic areas.  Completed to date are guides for Theatre, Education, Visual Arts/Photography, Nursing and Music. Guides currently being developed will cover Biology, Chemistry, and Sports & Exercise Science.

The tutorials meanwhile will be brief on-line how-to instructions in specific research skills. These will be in addition to the tutorials offered by CARLI (Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois) for all I-Share users, mostly on  ways to most effectively search I-Share. All of the tutorials include sound (spoken words). I-Share of course is the state-wide academic library system/online catalog; and Joe is a member of the I-Share Instruction Team that developed the tutorials.

This summer the librarians will be re-designing the freshman-level online information literacy tutorials.

Starting in August 2007, Staley Library will add a small low-cost collection of leisure reading books (best sellers not specifically intended for support of the University’s curriculum) to its holdings of over 210,000 print volumes. Similar programs are being offered by other academic libraries in Illinois, and are proving to be popular with library users.

And in conclusion, a bit of library humor: nothing new about technology instruction. (And yes, I do understand what they are saying - but you don't need to.)

As one indication of the value of studying abroad, at the Millikin University Honors Convocation on April 19, 2007, twelve of the 112 students (or almost 11%) who received awards are semester study abroad students, including two who are currently abroad. This is a higher percentage by far of semester study abroad than for the overall student body (close to 2%).  In addition, many more of the award winners have been on international immersion courses.

The International Programs web home page now showcases Millikin’s two new study abroad affiliations, Webster University’s International Network of Schools (WINS) and the University of Minnesota Learning Abroad Center.  These programs expand the study abroad opportunities for Millikin students with the addition of sites in Africa and South America, two areas of the world previously not well served by existing Millikin programs, and also new sites in Europe (such as in Italy and France), in China and India, and elsewhere in the world.

Here's wishing you a good summer!
