| The
big news this month is the arrival of access to the Illinois
Digital Library (IDAL),
a state-supported periodicals index and selective full-text database which
was launched in academic Illinois libraries throughout February 2000.
This is the project I first described more broadly in my December
1999 newsletter and then relative to the chosen vendor, EBSCO, in January.
(We had access to it already in February, though the launch had not been
completed.)
We are working on refining
the way IDAL and its many options are presented to the Millikin user, this
while we learn our way around the resource ourselves. However, no need
to wait with using IDAL: even while it was not yet fully implemented in
all Illinois academic libraries, over 28,000 full text articles were retrieved
via IDAL in the month of February 2000.
I believe that you will be
pleased with IDAL - we in Staley Library already are |
Did you know that the space
now occupied by Student Life, Multicultural Affairs, International Student
Services, and the Dean of Fine Arts was once the
location of the first library at Millikin University? Learn about this
and other facts of Millikin University library history, on
the web as well as in the library's exhibit cases. |
On March 20, 2000, Ms. Gavena
Dahlman will be joining the library staff as Circulation Associate
(Evening). Ms. Dahlman will be working from 3 p.m. to midnight Monday through
Thursday, as well as every other weekend during the academic year. This
will provide more consistent library service during the weekday evening
hours, especially late evenings, as well as provide some relief for the
library faculty.
Ms. Dahlman has an Associate
Degree in history from Richland College as well as a Library Technical
Assistant certificate from the College of DuPage. She has prior library
work experience in public libraries, including an internship at the Helen
Plum Library in Lombard, IL.
Ms. Dahlman was chosen for
our position from an excellent pool of candidates. We very much welcome
her, and know that you will too!
You can find a full list
of the library staff, as well as contact information, on our staff
page. |

During February, the library's
home page featured a frequently changing link to events related to Black
History Month. During March, the same attention will be paid to Women's
History Month, again beginning with the feature on that topic in the Encyclopedia
Britannica. (This of course is another teaser to lead you to that resource,
as well as to again point out the spotlighted links on our home page.) |

Spring cleaning for some people
includes finding books and other intellectual resources in their homes
or offices that they feel would be of more use in the library. We are always
grateful for such gifts, in that they can either fill in gaps or add richness
to the library's existing collection or else provide some money (via the
library's book sale shelves) for the purchase of other library materials.
Faculty also make gifts of their own publications, such as most recently
Provost Stephanie Quinn's Why Vergil? A Collection of Interpretations.
Still other gifts are items specifically purchased for the library, such
as GLAAM's contributions of the video Out of the past: the struggle
for gay and lesbian rights in America, and a year's subscription to
the journal Out, displayed on our Current Periodical shelving.
If you would like to make
this kind of gift to the library, please contact Cindy
Fuller, x3692. |
We have made an arrangement
with Media Services, on the lower floor in the library building, to make
some of their classrooms available for group study in the evenings until
10 p.m., Sunday through Thursday. Before nine p.m., the rooms must be signed
out through the Media Services Office; and then until 10 p.m. at the library's
Circulation Desk.
We are hoping that this will
help address the library noise concerns which have been brought to my attention
by the Student Senate. |
A reminder: along with other
Millikin University campus offices and services, the library's hours during
the week of Spring Break will be 9-4, M-F March 20-24. Also during Spring
Break, the library will be closed Sat-Sun, March 18-19, as well as Sat.
March 25. On Sunday the 26th we will be open from 6 p.m. to midnight, to
coincide with students' return to campus.
A current listing of the
library's hours is always available on our hours
page which you can reach via the link on our home page. |
