Getting Started With Your Research: General Tips for the Library Catalog

One of the first steps in the research process is finding out what materials are available to you here at Staley Library.

In fact, we have over 200,000 items available to you! MILLINET, the online library catalog, lists materials such as books, periodicals, videos, CDs, DVDs, sound recordings, and music scores owned by Staley Library. In addition, through MILLINET, you can search the I-Share catalog, which lists the materials of 65 Illinois university libraries. You can request many of those materials online and have them sent to you here at Millikin.

Accessing MILLINET:
  • Go to the Staley Library website at: http://www.millikin.edu/staley.
  • Click on the link Find Books, Music, Videos, and more at Staley Library.


    • Searching MILLINET:
  • An Any Word Anywhere search will look for any of the words you type in; if you
        want to search a phrase, enter it in quotation marks. Click on Search. The results are
        ranked by relevance.
  • Looking for a specific title? Type the name of the title (omit the first word if it begins
        with a, an, or the) into the “Search for” box and in the “Search by” box select Title
        (omit first word a, an, the). Click on Search.
  • Looking for a specific author? Type the author’s last name first into the “Search for” box     and in the “Search by” box select Author (last name, first name). Click on Search.
  • Want to combine search terms? Type your search terms (connect them using and,
        or, not) into the “Search for” box (i.e, television and violence) and in the “Search by”
        box select Boolean Search (use and, or, not). Click on Search.


    • I-Share Catalog:
  • To search, click on the I-Share Catalog button.
  • Use I-Share to borrow materials from other Illinois university libraries.
  • If you see a material you would like, click on the “Request” button to have it sent
        to Millikin.
  • Type in your last name and 14-digit Library Borrower ID listed on your Millikin
        University ID.


    • Logging into “My Account”:
  • Click on the Renew Books (My Account) button.
  • Type in your last name and 14-digit Library Borrower ID listed on your Millikin
        University ID.
  • Find out what materials you have checked out, requests you have made, renew
        materials, and any fines/fees that you may owe.
