Nurse.com Sponsored by a communications company that also produces print publications for nurses. Extensive database of current RN employment listings, including international. Also has career advice, educational resources and other features.

National Student Nurses' Association Career Center Links to hospitals (by region) offering job openings and internships, as well as tips on job searching and career planning.

Minority Nurse Career and education resources geared toward minority nurses, including employer profiles, academic programs and job postings.

Monster Healthcare The large internet employment site also features career advice for nurses.

Lifeworks: Explore Health and Medical Science Careers From the Office of Science Education, US Department of Health and Human Services, Lifeworks informs users about over 100 careers in health/medical fields including education required and salary ranges.

FreeMedicalJournals This site offers free, full-text access to more than 1,300 medical journals online. Access alphabetically or by specialty, in English and other languages. There is also a free journal-alert service that provides weekly updates of literature and abstracts in the journal subset of your choice, and access to 600 medical books online.

LinkOut Journals(PubMed) Links to issues of more than 4,000 journals that provide access to full-text articles. Some require user registration or fee.

Hardin MD Selected list of free full-text medical journals online.

PubMed Central This digital archive of the U.S. National Library of Medicine contains full-text of about 80 life-sciences journals.

BioMed Central Over 100 peer-reviewed Open-Access biomedical journals. Use the "Advanced Search" (link at top) to search them.

HighWire Press The "largest archive of free life science journals in the world." Searchable across all journals (Medline and HighWire-hosted), with detailed browse options also.

VirtualMed Access to web sites of free online medical journals.

Online Journal of Issues in Nursing Peer-reviewed publication covering issues that affect nursing practice, research and education. Articles from 1996 onward available.

National League for Nursing The leading accrediting body for nursing education programs in the United States. Links to professional development information, test products and publications.

National Student Nurses' Association Information, resources, support for nursing students.

American Association of Colleges of Nursing Organization for national baccalaureate- and higher-degree nursing education programs. Sponsors educational, research, governmental advocacy, data collection, publications and other programs.

National Council of State Boards of Nursing Information about the NCLEX exams as well as statistics relating to the licensure of nurses and related research.

American Nurses Credentialing Center A subsidiary of the American Nurses Association, the center certifies health-care providers, accredits educational providers and programs, and supports research, education and consultative services.

Specialized Nursing

Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses Professional organization dedicated to "fostering excellence in adult health/medical-surgical nursing practice." News, career center, online CE, certification and other information.

American Psychiatric Nurses Association Represents the specialty practice of psychiatric-mental health nursing. News, education, legislative updates and links to additional resources, including access to the online Journal of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association.

Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses Leading professional organization for nurses who specialize in the care of women and newborns. Website includes news and events, education and practice resources, publications and research, and legislation.

AANA (American Association of Nurse Anesthetists) The AANA represents more than 42,000 CRNAs and student nurse anesthetists. The site includes resources and news about the profession, as well as information on becoming credentialed.

Reference Resources

Medilexicon Search for over 70,000 medical, pharmaceutical, biomedical and healthcare acronyms and abbreviations, with links to relevant journal articles. Also contains medical news and other searches for the medical professionals.

Hardin Meta Directory of Internet Health Sources From the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences at the University of Iowa. Links to sites with symptoms and descriptions of hundreds of diseases, as well as pictures of many. Also links to nursing sites and other resources, such as free online journals.

Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy The 17th edition (1999) of the well-known publication is available free online. Fully searchable, or access through the table of contents. See also the Merck Manual of Medical Information – Home Edition

Bookshelf Collection of searchable biomedical texts from the NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information).

Medscape Reference Online knowledge base for health professionals contains articles on 7,000 diseases and disorders, along with practice guidelines in 62 medical specialties.

Gray's Anatomy This edition of Gray's "Anatomy of the Human Body" features 1,247 engravings, many in color, from the 1918 publication as well as a subject index with 13,000 entries.

Medical Dictionary From the MedlinePlus site.

Health on the Net Created from an international conference to promote health-care information on the internet and now a Swiss-based foundation. Advanced searching for medical documents and articles, as well as news about conferences and surveys.

General Sites

WebMD Offers WebMD Health, with extensive medical and health and wellness information, interactive tests and news.

Mayo Clinic A variety of health information on medical conditions, nutrition and fitness, prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Registered users can get a "personal health scorecard" and/or sign up for a free online newsletter.

Health Central Health updates, resources such as quizzes, a health encyclopedia and interactive human atlas, and drug information including drug interactions.

Dr. Weil Information on health and wellness from Dr. Andrew Weil, a Harvard Medical School graduate who emphasizes medicinal herbs, mind-body interactions, and integrative medicine.

Intelihealth As well as general medical information, features a guide on genetic testing, interactive tools, news and health commentaries from Harvard Medical School.

NetWellness From Ohio universities. Health topics, an encyclopedia, current health news, clinical trials.

Emedicine Another general site. "Centers" with a variety of information on health, lifestyle and wellness, and first aid and emergencies.

National Center for Health Statistics Contains news releases, fact sheets, Monthly Vital Statistics Reports, health and disease information, and prevention guidelines and strategies.

Go Ask Alice A health question-and-answer service provided by the Health Education Program at Columbia University. Submit a question about general health, sexuality or sexual health, fitness and nutrition, emotional health, alcohol and other drugs, or search or browse the collection of nearly 2,000 previously posted questions and answers.

Center Watch Clinical trials listing service has thousands of industry-sponsored clinical trials that are actively recruiting patients. Answers to frequently asked questions about the clinical trials process, drug directories and additional resources.

Quackwatch According to its mission statement, the site's purpose is to: investigate questionable claims, distribute reliable information, report illegal marketing, and improve the quality of health information on the Internet.

Government Web Sites

MEDLINEplus From the National Library of Medicine, MEDLINEplus has extensive information on over 600 diseases and conditions; lists of hospitals and physicians; medical encyclopedia; medical dictionary; health information in Spanish; information on prescription and nonprescription drugs; health information from the media; and links to thousands of clinical trials.

Healthfinder Developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this site is a gateway to government and nonprofit health and human services information on the Internet. Search under health topic alphabetically or by demographic grouping. Also has current health news and information about doctors, dentists, public clinics, hospitals, long-term care, nursing homes, health insurance, prescriptions, Medicare and more.

National Institutes of Health The National Institutes of Health, a government agency, is the main center for medical and behavioral research for the country. Search for or browse health topics alphabetically or by category, or link to other governmental health and medical sites such as MEDLINEplus.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Information on public health, diseases, safety, environmental health, health promotion and educational activities, travelers' health. Data and statistics, as well as highlighted resources such as terrorism and public health and an online journal, Emerging Infectious Diseases.

FDA Information for Consumers Information about prescription drugs, foodborne illnesses, dietary supplements, medical devices, biologics and other products and issues. See http://www.fda.gov/oc/buyonline/ for tips and warnings on buying medicines and medical products online.

National Women's Health Information Center Website and toll-free call center. Special sections on women's health issues and tools such as news, dictionaries and journals.

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this agency seeks to reduce medical errors and to help patients make wise health-care choices.

Clinical Trials.gov A database of federally and privately supported clinical trials looking for volunteers. Provided by the National Institutes of Health and the National Library of Medicine.

Merck Manual of Medical Information The first edition of the best-selling home medical book is available online, as well as selected sections of the second edition, which is still in progress. Choose text or interactive (with multimedia elements).

PDR Health Drug information written in layman's terms and based on material in the Physicians' Desk Reference. Search or browse for prescription or over-the-counter drugs, herbal medicines and nutritional supplements. Also links from this site to disease overviews, health and wellness, and clinical trials.

RxList: The Internet Drug Index Enter a drug name for indepth information including description, use, dosings, side effects, and more.
