Identify your keywords/phrases/concepts:

Make a list of possible terms that will help you locate information about your subject.  If a term/concept may be expressed in more than one way, note this as well.

  • atomic absorption spectrophotometry
  • soil
  • iron
  • iron analysis
  • methods

Note how you might wish to combine these terms in your search.

  • atomic absorption spectrophotometry and soil
  • soil and iron
  • iron analysis and methods

Identify databases to search:

When selecting a databases (listed below) note the scope of the topic coverage and the dates of the content of each.

  • SciFinder Scholar
For tips on using SciFinder Scholar (available on library computers), use these Interactive Tutorials.  Available in General Chemistry, Biology, and Chemical Engineering versions.

  • How to Obtain Articles
Is it available full text online?:
  • Check for hyperlinks that say: HTML Full Text, PDF Full Text, Linked Full Text, etc.
  • Click on the "Find It!" button. This will search most of our other databases for electronic full text options for the article. [if there are none, it also provides links to MILLINET to search for print subscriptions, and an online Interlibrary Loan form!]
  • Or, use the Electronic Periodicals List to locate a Staley Library subscription resource that carries the full text of the desired periodical.
If not, do we have a print subscription? If all else fails, use ILL (Interlibrary Loan)!

Internet Resources

Web Searching

E-molecules: "E-molecules mission is to discover, curate and index all of the public chemical information in the world, and make it available to the public for free."

Scirus: A science-specific search engine

Google Scholar: Searches only online scholarly literature.  Note:  Not all results will be freely accessible!

Google Advanced Search:  Try Google's advanced search option for a more precise search.

And you can check out the search features of many of the general web search engines at Search Engine Showdown.

Web Directories

Internet Public Library: Chemistry: A list of online chemistry resources from the School of Information at the University of Michigan.

Chemistry in Yahoo! Directory: a directory of online chemistry resources divided by categories such as biochemistry, clinical chemistry, physical chemistry, spectroscopy, etc.  From Yahoo!

Free Web Resources

ACS Style Guidelines: A nice guide from the University of Wisconsin, Madison Libraries.

ChemFinder.com:  A database searchable by chemical name, CAS number, molecular formula or weight.

Chemical Manufacturers:  Alphabetical list of chemical manufacturers.

NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) Chemistry Databases: government compiled and developed "benchmark data for the properties of important substances, classes of substances and systems."  See also: NIST's Chemical and Crystal Structure and NIST's Chemical Kinetics.

ChemWeb : World Wide Club for the Chemistry Community : Membership required, but free. Access to library of chemistry periodicals, products, substructure searching.

TOXNET : a freely accessible government database produced by the National Library of Medicine.  TOXNET indexes articles on toxicology, hazardous chemicals, environmental health, and toxic releases.  Also accessible from this site:  ChemIDplus, Hazardous Substances Databank, and more.

Please see:  UIUC's Chemistry Library's list of Online Chemistry Resources for more useful links.
