IN150 -- Critical Writing, Reading & Research 1

Without question you know that as a college student you will be doing research. As a matter of fact, the title of this particular class, Critical Writing, Reading, and RESEARCH, should indicate to you the importance of this aspect of your college education. Learning research skills will be crucial to your success in college. During the course of the next two semesters Research/Instruction Librarians from Staley Library will teach you research skills in your CWRR1 and CWRR2 classes.

Millikin Information Literacy Tutorial (MILT) for IN150
Complete the web-based MILT tutorial for IN150. This tutorial introduces students to:

  • The concept of information literacy
  • Scholarly research tools
  • Strategies for citing sources
  • How to avoid plagiarism

This tutorial uses sound, so make sure and have your headphones plugged in, or your speakers enabled. If you do not have access to headphones or speakers, you may check out headphones from the Library Circulation Desk and listen to the MILT tutorial in the Library.

After you finish the tutorial, you will be directed to a quiz in Moodle. Results of the quiz will be given to your IN150 professor.

In CWRR1, the Librarians will:

  • Introduce you to the Staley Library building.
  • Introduce you to resources available through Staley Library, both in the library and via the web.
  • Provide you with guidelines to make your research time more productive and effective.
  • Provide you with the necessary skills to make the best possible choices in your sources. (Hint: We're talking about the kinds of things your professor would like to see you use!!)
  • Provide you with sources (i.e. places to go) that will help you become a more independent researcher.
  • AND most importantly - Become friendly faces on campus ready to help you with your research!!

Your responsibilities are:

  • Keep your eyes and ears open during all research classes.
  • Don't come to class with the assumption - "I know this already!"
  • Ask questions!! If you don't understand something, chances are pretty good someone else doesn't either.
  • Be adventurous - learn and try some new resources!

This semester you will:

  • Be introduced to the physical library space via a self-guided introduction in your University Seminar.
  • Enroll in a Moodle course and complete our online tutorial MILT and an accompanying quiz.
  • Be introduced to the library's web page and the resources the library provides.
  • Learn how to prevent and avoid plagiarism.
  • Become aware of library policies and procedures via a brochure you receive in class.

Next semester you will:

  • Learn how to implement a research process:
    • Utilize background sources.
    • Engage in and formulate research questions.
    • Plan a search strategy.
    • Retrieve sources in appropriate databases.
    • Evaluate the sources you retrieve for academic quality.
  • Apply the research skills you learn directly to your research paper.

Why are research skills important?

Answers to this very important question are illustrated on our Asking the important questions about Information page.
The research skills you develop this year will be very different from those needed by a student who entered college even five years ago.

Preventing Plagiarism

Guidelines for preventing plagiarism are available on the library's Preventing Plagiarism web page.
This issue is of great concern and the information and links on this page will help guide you in making appropriate decisions when incorporating sources into your writing.
