Award Winners

There are many prizes awarded for children's and young adult literature. Below are links to the official sites for many of the major awards, which include comprehensive lists of prize winners and honorees along with a short description of each award and its selection criteria.

Newbery Medal (authors)

American Indian Youth Literature Award (books by or about American Indians, three awards: picture book, middle school, and young adult)

Mildred L. Batchelder Award (books originally published in another language than English, later translated into English and published in the U.S.)

Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal (authors and illustrators of nonfiction for children)

Theodor Seuss Geisel Award (authors and illustrators of books for beginning readers)

Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal (authors or illustrators, lifetime achievement)

Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature (authors of books for young adults)

Margaret A. Edwards Award (authors of books for young adults, lifetime achievement)

Schneider Family Book Awards (author or illustrator of books that "emphasizes the artistic expression of the disability experience," young child, middle school, and teen categories)

Dolly Gray Award for Children's Literature in Developmental Disabilities ( author and illustrator (if appropriate) of a children's picture book and/or a juvenile/young adult chapter book that includes appropriate portrayals of individuals with developmental disabilities)

Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Children's Video (outstanding video productions for children)

Alex Awards (adult books that appeal to young adult readers)

ALSC Notable Lists (from the Associaton for Library Service to Children, lists of notable books, videos, recordings, and computer software)

Rebecca Caudill Young Reader's Book Award (authors, voted for by Illinois students in grades 4-8)

Challenged Books

The American Library Association (ALA) keeps statistics on and creates lists of challenged books, which they define as "a formal, written complaint, filed with a library or school requesting that materials be removed because of content of appropriateness." Books for children and young adults often comprise the majority of these lists.

Children's Books Online

International Children's Digital Library Over 400 titles in languages from English to Farsi and French to Serbian. Mostly picture books (with some chapter books), in graphic file and pdf format. Literature for Children "Literature for Children is a collection of the treasures of children's literature published largely in the United States and Great Britain from before 1850 to beyond 1950." Searchable by author, title, subject, and keyword. Available in jpeg and pdf formats. Created by the University of Florida.
