It’s that time of year when college seniors start searching and applying for jobs. Senior Kirstin Menke, however, isn’t worried about finding employment—her resume is packed with valuable experience she gained from two different internships in the accounting field.

Kirstin interned in both the auditing and corporate accounting departments at Mueller Co. in Decatur, a gas and water company that repairs and sells replacement parts. During her first internship, Kirstin participated in one audit. “I got to work on four sections of the audit and got experience with each of those types of accounting,” she said.

Kirstin got more experience in the corporate accounting side as well. “I dealt with their financial statements and business,” she said. “I helped the corporate accounting manager with her duties, helped to put together some financial statements and worked on a lot of month-end procedures.”

Not only did Kirstin’s Millikin connections get her these internships, her Millikin education also prepared her to succeed. “Many of the people who need an accountant’s assistance have no idea what they’re looking at when they see the numbers,” she said. “Millikin has prepared me to explain the benchmarks and numbers that are needed to meet a particular goal.”

For Kirstin, it’s all about gaining as much diverse experience as possible.

“Employers love students coming out of college with a strong GPA that already have work experience,” she said. “It helps to do two completely different internships within your field.”
