A city’s economic prosperity is affected by the number of people living in the community. Michael Gavic, a business management major, is learning firsthand about this relationship. Michael is taking part in a consulting project with the City of Decatur to determine how Decatur is growing and how that growth affects the economy.

“Our objective is to look deeper into current ways to achieve smart growth,” Michael said. “A great deal of the project has to do with annexation and water agreements with citizens outside the city. We are looking for the best and most financially sound way to deal with the annexation process.”

Michael is also working on a variety of other projects for the city, such as researching how taxes affect residents who become part of the city of Decatur, how residents feel about this process, and how Decatur’s growth as a city compares to nearby cities. All of this research will enable Michael to contribute to the creation of a long-term plan for the City of Decatur’s growth.

Michael believes he will draw from his Tabor School of Business classes throughout this project. “My previous management classes have given me the tools to know how to manage the City of Decatur’s growth concerns,” he said.
