While other people his age spend their summers in part-time jobs and lounging by the pool, junior Management Information Systems major Nico Amoroso worked at State Farm, implementing systems and projects that the company will use for years to come.
Nico’s first assignment combined his MIS knowledge with human resources information. “I was asked to come up with a new and improved mentoring plan to help new employees and summer interns transition into the team,” he said. “It laid out all aspects of the job and helped facilitate a smooth transition from being a new member to an educated member.”
Other tasks Nico tackled during the summer included creating a marketing plan that targeted young adults in the State Farm markets, learning how to give professional speeches and presentations in a business setting, and reconfiguring one of State Farm’s information storage systems.
Nico attributes his success at State Farm to the preparation he received through Tabor School of Business. “The classes that really prepared me for my internship were Dr. Stemler's system design courses,” he said. “We had them come up with a system plan the first semester and implement it in the second semester. It was very comparable to the work place because we were placed in groups with people that all had different skills. I saw this every day in the work place.”
The internship also landed him another job: Nico will return to State Farm for the summer of 2007, this time to work as a Systems Analyst.
