Assessment of Student Learning in IN350 Global Studies

Millikin University Bulletin description:

IN350. Global Studies (3 credits) Junior year. Global studies courses explore the fundamental diversity and interconnectedness of the world. There is a substantial dimension of cultural comparison in the course. Students will gain substantive understanding of how the diversity of the world affects their everyday lives. There should be a significant component to the course that reaches beyond the United States. Students are exposed to primary sources (texts, music, artifacts) from multiple cultures. There is a significant research component which pushes students to explore culturally diverse points of view. Each discipline is expected to approach this course with its own perspective on the unit of analysis: individual, group, culture, world or specific issue. For this reason, wide variation among offerings is to be expected. Prerequisites: junior standing.

Student Learning in Global Studies (IN350)
GE Requirement Abridged Assessment Plan

Coordinator of Global Studies for 2007-2008:
Dr. Alexa Royden, Assistant Professor of Political Science

Global Studies (IN350) is a sequential requirement in the MPSL. All Millikin students are required to fulfill this requirement by taking a 3-credit designated Global Studies course.

Global Studies Learning Outcome Goals

The student learning goals in Global Studies courses focus on the following three areas:

  1. Students will compare cultural and social structures by examining primary sources from multiple cultures beyond the United States.
  1. Students will gain substantive understanding of how the diversity of the world affects their everyday lives.
  1. Students will further their abilities to conduct research, which encourages students to explore culturally diverse points of view

Global Studies Snapshot

The full-length assessment report provides an overview of the various courses offered (including off-campus immersions) and of the faculty who teach them. A typical semester’s offerings include about fifteen different courses. The majority of these classes are taught by full-time Millikin faculty from a variety of disciplines.

The Learning Story

Global Studies courses offer students a final step in Millikin students’ ever-broadening views of the world, and challenge students to negotiate the ideas and cultural practices of groups beyond the boundaries of the U.S. Students have the opportunity to actively engage in global issues of diverse communities, while immersed in the culture directly related to the academic topic of their course. IN350 courses are designed to include a variety of primary sources (film, literature, music), out-of-class activities, guest lecturers, and research requirements to accomplish the learning goals.

Assessment Methods

Course development guidelines (complete faculty guidelines are posted on the CGI website) require faculty to demonstrate, through their syllabi, how each course will fulfill five areas, related directly to the Learning Goals. A short student survey to be administered toward the end of the IN350 course measures students’ perceptions of aspects of the course directly related to the learning goals established for Global Studies.

Assessment Data

The report will include the data results collected from course proposals and course syllabi. The content of course syllabi and proposals are assessed as to whether they fulfill the IN350 course development guidelines. It will also include data collected from the student survey.

Analysis of Assessment Results

The report will analyze the data collected and will evaluate the effectiveness of IN350 courses in helping students meet the learning goals.

Improvement Plans

The Global Issues Committee will review the annual assessment report. They will develop an annual in-service workshop to provide an informative forum in which to continue broader faculty discussion and interest in the vibrancy of the Global Studies area of the Millikin curriculum.
