Assessment of Student Learning in Track A - Language Requirement

Millikin University Bulletin description:

(0-8 credits) Students placed at the 103, 114, or 223 levels must take two courses. Those placed at the 300 level or above must take one course. The requirement for this track may also be met by successful completion of a proficiency exam, by study abroad with non-English instruction, or by being a native speaker of a non-English language.
NOTE:  Students seeking a B.A. degree must also complete an Intermediate Level Language course to meet the B.A. degree requirement. Completing Beginning Language (103) and Continuing Language (114) will meet this Track requirement but students must also complete Intermediate Language (223) to meet the B.A. requirement. Students placed above the Intermediate Level can meet the B.A. and Track requirement by taking one course above 223.


Track A - Language Requirement Assessment Plan

Learning Goals

The learning outcome goals for students taking (0-8 credits) of Modern Language Study (track A) are that students will be able to demonstrate:

  • proficiency, at an intermediate level, in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in a foreign language; and
     
  • comprehension and appreciation of the culture of a foreign country.

Includes information on placement, faculty, and facilities, lists courses taught for the MPSL Track A—Second Language requirement, describes the Department of Modern Language’s teaching philosophy and methodology, and plans assessment practices.

Learning Story

The Department of Modern Languages has implemented a communicative approach to teaching a foreign language in all its courses.

Assessment Methods

The two learning goals for the MPSL Track A—Second Language will be assessed by reviewing the following artifacts:

  • compositions
  • oral or written exams
  • reports

Analysis of Assessment Results

The Department of Modern Languages will review the artifacts and use that review to evaluate the program as a whole.

Improvement Plans

Recommendations for improvement will be provided.
